Sales for occupancy is the primary goal of this assisted living facility.  I was "sold" on a position and bought into the Sunrise core values. It took me approximately 2 weeks to realize that the lovely ideals and luxury hotel like atmosphere is a facade. Hiding behind approximately 75%  of the apartment doors are residents who are imprisoned- kept in their apartments, due to "unsightly"  medical or psychiatric conditions whose presence in common areas would deter potential occupants touring the community. Behind the doors therein lies horrid neglect of residents who have complex medical needs requiring an higher level of care. The memory care unit is a nightmare of our most fragile seniors,  surrounded by other inappropriately placed residents with  major psychiatric disorders. Very few, well meaning, untrained staff attempt to mitigate resident to resident abuse and a cacophony of constant misery.  The mantra of regional management is " we can manage that." The reality is that they admit patients who are not medically appropriate, employ  a minimal staff who are given unimaginable responsibilities,  are  minimally paid and minimally trained. Sunrise can not "manage that." The result is deadly, and current state regulatory guidance pertaining to assisted living allows sunrise to continue to perpetuate the facade and literally jeopardize the safety of both its residents and staff-all for the almighty dollar.  if you are considering placing a loved one in an alf, please do your research.  I still feel guilty for participating in the "sell."
