I was a customer of Suntrust for 3 years having dutifully paid my car payment on time each month. When I switched to internet banking, I missed part of the account number. Instead of checking it out, they sent my payments back and charged a monthly late fee as well as a bogus charge for having someone put a hanger on my door, which did not happen.

When you speak to their reps. on the phone they are surly and not helpful. I think they are trying to pump up their bottom line at the expense of the consumer. I was told directly they make NO attempt to correctly place a payement.

In other words, they are looking for reasons to return payments so they can charge late fees and costs.

If you have a choice, AVOID Suntrust for your consumer needs.

Where is the Rip-Off?

I don't see how SunTrust is at fault here... If you didn't supply the correct account number, they cannot apply the payment. It would be different if it was their mistake- then they should credit any late fees. By your own admission, this was your mistake, so where is the Rip-Off?

I've had 3 accounts with SunTrust for 7 years, and I have received excellent customer service from them at every point of contact.

If they had corrected your mistake,

you would have continued to make the same mistake over and over. Now that you are aware, you can correct your error. How is Suntrust to know which account to credit if the acount number is wrong.

If an account does not exist due to an incorrect number then of course I would expect it to be returned.

Of course they could have made a guess and applied the payment to someone's account that was similar except for the missing digit.
