It's not that the supermarket (calling themselves, Supermercado) Cost+Plus charges taxes on foods that are exempt--they don't.  What they do charge, is a 20% SURCHARGE on everything in the store!

Then they advertise "specials" in their weekly circular--but say nothing about the surcharge, which you learn about only when you read your receipt, which according to their Customer Service, you're supposed to do at the CASH REGISTER, with lines of people behind you, fuming & fussing.

I bought sugar yesterday on my way home (12/24/11) at $1.68. Nice price I thought (without looking at my receipt at the checkout) OK, dumb of me, but I was rushed. Then I found out in the car that they charged me $2.02! Figured out, that was a *20%* 'surcharge' *emphasis mine*--they actually have the gall to list it on the receipt!

I went back to Customer Service, and they said I "should have stayed at the register and disputed my purchase price there--not at Customer Service! This is the only store I've been to here, that does it like that! When there's a mistake in Krogers', Albertsons, Tom Thumb etc, you CANNOT dispute it at the checkout line, THEY send you to Customer Service! And Supermercado Cost+Plus (at least it's well named!)  calls this Rip Off a "surcharge"?!  How do they get by with this, I'd like to know?!

Is this surcharge legal? Maybe you can post other supermarkets who do this? I guess I better check complaint sites before going shopping!
