Since I've seen this scam in operation. Reminds me of a certain other software company based in the UK that would scare people into buying protective software after the illusion of "reverse reading" their hard drives and generating menacing messages, such as; "what are all those PICTURES on your desktop?" (insinuating pr0n), even if there were no pix on your desktop.

That certain software company got themselves a really bad rep after a while for their intimidating behavior and essentially shaking down their client base, not to mention their product didn't live up to it's claims. I'm not 100% sure of the government body that deals with this particular level of huckstering, but I'd urge the OP to find out what it is and report the company, which is obviously taking gross advantage of people who don't know a lot about how virii and the programs that eliminate them....

The charge for a "one time" virus removal of this nature is close to criminal IMHO. There are a number of good, solid anti-virus programs out there that, if you don't need all the bells and whistles, are quite effective and are free.

Certainly a scam, and not a nice one either.

The popup was simply an ad that stated you have a trojan.  The target audience for this scam is people who blindly believe anything they see on their computer screen.  The rest of us would have probably run a virus scan before handing over the money.

If you installed any software from this scammer, you may have actually introduced a trojan yourself.   Software from scammers is probably not the cleanest code in the world.    I seriously suggest that you uninstall whatever they sent you, then do a thorough scan with a legitimate security product.

the popup was really an advertisement for their bogus software and you really didn't have a trojan on the computer.
