I purchased the App Luminair L2 from Synthe FX to control a light show. $90 was steep but the app advertised function that I needed. I found programming the light show with moving heads to be a painstakingly difficult task and was having issues with latency and moving head response. After a month of use I mothballed my light show project to work on it at another time. Fast forward to today, I pull out all my hardware and boot up the app to find it to be completely unresponsive and unable to control my lights. I search the App Store for an update and see that Luminair L3 or Luminair 3 is available for purchase for $90. When looking into it I find that shortly after my purchase they released a new version and are charging full price even to those who just purchased the old app at full price. It appears while I purchased the old version they were developing a new app with intentions of charging customers twice using the excuse that "it's the first paid update in 5 years". If that's the case, version 2 should have been discounted during the development of version 3 unless it was just a bait and switch. They knew full well that those that purchased the product in late 2014 early 2015 would be charged $90 for 4-8 months of use whereas the customers who purchased in 2010 were charged $90 for 4-5 years of use. Had I even been able to utilize the app without bugs, glitches or issues this might be understandable but I feel like I got ripped off. I contacted support and was told I can still download version 2 (which I suspect is no longer supported or updated) but that version 3 which has the same name, icon, general layout and functionality is a brand new product, and that they don't have access to purchase records so I can either use the unsupported version or make a purchase of $90 again. As much as I would like to do business with this company I cannot support a company that treats their new customers like this. You can't just scoop people up and drop them on their heads. It's not right.

So I misunderstood how RipOff Report works. It was my understanding you file the report first, and then contact the business to repair the situation. If the business repairs the situation you can edit your original report. Not the case aparently, and this doesn't seem fair to them. They did develop a revolutionary software that is an industry standard and loved by thousands of lighting professionals. They do have absolutely zero qualms about taking me for $90 though, and just hid behind the terms of service of the apple app store. Maybe some good will come out of this, maybe they will learn that the individual customer still matters and policies are meant to be broken in order to serve your customers who live in the real world. Go ahead and buy Luminair, but just realize $90 isn't your final purchase price. They could come out with a new version at any minute and charge you whatever they like for that. If you're okay buying the program a few times then definitely use it... You'll probably enjoy it.
