Complaint Review: Target National Bank

Target National Bank, Retailer's National Bank RIPOFF! Sioux Falls South Dakota

  • Reported By:
    Austin Texas
  • Submitted:
    Wed, January 05, 2005
  • Updated:
    Sat, July 02, 2005

I recently received a bill from Target National Bank for $120.00 I do NOT have a Target account, but I have a Mervyn's Account. The statement said that they were formerly known as Retailer's National Bank (which is who I usually make my payments to) I assumed that they changed their name, since I know that Target sold Mervyn's.

I sent them a payment for 48.07... Mervyn's says they never received my payment. The check has already cleared the bank. The customer service representative says there is nothing they can do about it.

I would like to let you know that Target National Bank does exist. You can check it out on the Target website. Most major department stores have their own bank for credit card processing. Unfortunately, they often get bought out by another company. I know this this is common because I used to work for Sears National Bank, which was bought out by Citibank.

I once applied for a job at the Target National Bank, in Tempe AZ. I have also lived in Sioux Falls SD, where your statement came from. If you check the address it is Retailers National Bank. According to Target's website, they purchased Retailers National Bank. Which would be the reason for your statement saying Target National Bank on it.

The customer service rep you spoke to was wrong. They can put in a request to research the payment, but you will need to contact your bank. Get a copy of the voided check (front and back), and fax it correct department. Hope this helps!

Target National Bank used to be Retailer's National Bank. I have a Target visa through them and received a letter beforehand that they were changing their names. I now make my payments to Target National Bank and the payments are received.

GOING THROUGH THE SAME CRAP WITH THEM RIGHT NOW

After never missing a payment or being late on a payment, they decided to jack up the interest on my Target Visa, so I paid it off in full and closed it..so I thought.

Electronic check issued by my Credit Union's bill pay service cleared in January. I still am getting bills each month with a $25 "late fee" tacked onto..now get this..the balance that was paid in full. When I call "Customer Service" and ask for a fax # to send this to, I am told that they cannot give me that information. I mailed copies of this to them via Priority Mail, have tracking information, yet "we have no record of receiving any correspondence."

They will be getting some correspondence today from my attorney (along with the check copy), so the ball is in their court. So far, they have not reported anything negative to the CRAs..in fact, on Experian and Equifax, showing as "0 balance, account closed at the request of consumer".

So please don't fall for whoever is putting that out! Never send payments to a new address unless you have been sent more than one letter stating the address has changed! and if you did send the check to someone else, then there really is nothing Mervyn's can do...

Contact The Bank Who Cashed The Check!

Find out who cashed the check, contact them and advise them that they need to issue you a refund IMMEDIATELY or you will file theft charges against them. Perhaps that will get someone's attention. Put everything in writing and be sure to cc a copy of the Attorney Generals offices in South Dakota and Texas. Good Luck.
