Complaint Review: Tayani Eye Institute

Tayani Eye Institute, Dr Tayani removed a Ptrygium from my eye, in the process he thinned the sclera two much and 1-1/2 years later I have what looks like a hole in my eye as you can see the retina behind the sclera. I went to Dr Tayani and asked him to pay to have it fixed, he said he would not do that. I questioned him before the surgery and the worst possible result was that the ptrygium could grow back Mission Viejo California

Dr Tayani removed a Pterygium from my eye, in the process he thinned the sclera two much and 1-1/2 years later I have what now looks like a hole in my eye as you can see the retina behind the sclera. I went to Dr Tayani and asked him to pay to have it fixed, he said he would not do that. I questioned him before the surgery and he said the worst possible result was that the pterygium could grow back, which I was fine with.

I had gone to him before I quite my job as I still had insurance to make sure everything was ok, the color pigmentation had gotten lighter and I was concerned, his assistant assured me that it would be fine and go ahead and quite your job. I am going into full time missionary work and wanted to make sure that all was well as I would have no insurance when I quite. Well, what developed into a hole looking object emerged a couple of months later, this coupled with the fact that he told me that the worst that could happen was that the pterygium could grow back violates the Hyppocratic oath, "Above all do no harm". I would be careful before receiving any type of surgery from Dr Tayani as I don't believe him to be an honest man. May God bless you all. Troy

Just to clear up some misunderstandings;

1) the worst thing that could happen with pterygium surgery is that the pterygium will grow back.

2) A medication named mitomycin was provided and is commonly used by asute pterygium surgeons. This medication when PROPERLY used decreases the possibility of pterygium reoccurance; however, does come with a list of complications (just like all drugs). Patients are advised of this medications complications such as possible thinning of the sclera again, if not properly used.

3) Lubricating drops are provided to all patients that MUST be used frequently along side the mitomycin to again avoid the thinning of the sclera and other complications.

Everyone reading this please note the "hole" in this man's eye was NOT caused by the surgery itself but, improper management of the medication.

I have asked Dr.Tayani to post his rebuttal to this exact case; there is always two sides to a story. Thank you for allowing me to speak briefly in regards to this type of case.
