Complaint Review: Telecheck

Telecheck repeatedly declining my checks for no reason! This is harrassment and defamation of character! It's embarrassing! Houston Texas

Starting about a month ago I lost my debit card so I cancelled it and decided not to get a new one right away(I tend to spend more money when it is so readily accessible to me) However, telecheck has made my life a living hell. They have declined in excess of 10 checks at various types of merchants - even at my doctor's office! When I call, their service reps are rude and cannot tell me why I have been declined. They say it is a fluke, but then why does it continue to happen and why is the frequency with which my checks are declined increasing? I am at the point where I cannot write a check for anything!!!!! This is despite not having bad credit, never having bounced or written a bad check before, and having a bank account balance in the four figures. I call each and every time. Telecheck reps are idiots who cannot answer any questions. They are rude. They don't have any compassion as to the trouble and humilitation they are causing and for no reason! I have yet to hear them say they are sorry for anything! Where do these people get the power to say when and where I can use my hard earned money? Can anybody help me with this mess. I need to be able to write checks. I have just started to plan my wedding and anticipate that I will be writing a lot of them in the near future. I am frustrated and ready to sue for compensation for the trouble they are causing me, not to mention making me feel like a deadbeat check writer - they are accusing me of a crime and I am guilty until proven innocent and they have no interest in clearing my good name. In fact, the more I call to complain to them the worse the situation gets. Don't I have a right as a consumer to complain without fear of retaliation? HELP!

Maybe Tele-Chek just has the one employee that replied here and that is who you get when you call in. You did not lie. Rude! Rude! Rude! No offer to help resolve the "fluke" just some screaming at you. Pffttt - I say get the debit card again and avoid dealing with Tele-Chek. Wow! Cannot believe a company lets an employee respond like that. Note to self: avoid writing checks where I see the Tele-Chek sign.

Telecheck uses your entire routing and account from the bottom of your check to store your info in the database.

The ink printed on the bottom of your check is magnetic, and when the check is scanned it is processed thru the database for approval...the entire number not just a portion of it. A TCK employee may ask you to verify the last 4 digits, but thats only to verify what you entered into the automated system or what is pulling up linking to your information.

There is no possible way this is "defamation" of character since telecheck is not releasing your information to the retailer. They are only given a code for a decline. That doesn't mean you have negative information on file. The retailer is never told the exact reason for the decline since that would be breaking laws. The only way they can be told specifically is if they call in, and it turns out that there was a bad check written to their business. But any other info on file cannot and will not be released to them by Telecheck.

I don't know why anyone would be embarrassed if you know you have money in your account. And if you know you've never bounced a check, then who cares what other people think. Seriously, are you in grade school that you care that much what people you don't even know think about you??? Who cares what other people think?!?

ANY BUSINESS HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE YOUR CHECK FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER!!! JUST LIKE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE YOUR BUSINESS...JUST LIKE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO NOT SHOP THERE!!!

THERE IS NO LAW THAT SAYS A BUSINESS IS OBLIGATED OR REQUIRED TO TAKE YOUR CHECK!!!

A CHECK IS NOT A GUARANTEED FORM OF PAYMENT...IT'S A PROMISSARY NOTE. IT'S ISSUED BY YOUR BANK, NOT THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL RESERVE. IT IS SIGNED ONLY BY YOU, NOT THE SECRETARY OF TREASURY.

A number of years ago I found I could not write a check at my local Safeway. I had not bounced any checks, but Telecheck still rejected mine. I found that Telecheck does not use your entire account number when deciding whether to accept a check. They only use the last few digits, so if someone else has those same last digits and bounced checks you are screwed. The problem was solved by using a debit card and I have not tried to write a check in a grocery store in over 15 years.

Common Occurrence With Telecheck

#8Consumer Suggestion

The scenerio you describe is quite common. I first learned of it about 3 or 4 years ago when I was shopping with a freind who is quite wealthy with a nice checking account. Oh my, was she ever embarrassed. She just pulled out her credit card and paid for her order that way. Nothing wrong with her account. 30 times the amount of the check in her checking account, but telecheck declined it. I had such a good time laughing at her embarrassment, as a friend to a friend of course, in play.
Wasn't quite so funny when it happened to me. I called to find out why my check was declined and was told I had already written my 'quota' of checks. From what I could gather you can only write (I had written two checks, one to Walmart, and one to Sams Club in the previous 3 days) so many checks in a certain period of time.
