"wanted record of what transaction was for it was why i used checks."

Telecheck is a private service that gives Walmart its opinion of your check. Since they don't have access to your bank account, they base their decision on your past check writing history. It's a flawed system, but Walmart uses them because Telecheck guarantees that the check will be good if they approve it. If for any reason Telecheck doesn't have the right data in their files to approve the check, they deny it. If I were you, I'd let the manager of the store know that you don't appreciate having perfectly good checks rejected.

Checks are going the way of the dinosaur. These days, when anyone can create an electronic check using the information contained on your checks, they are also less secure than debit cards. If you need a record of what the transaction was for, just write it on the back of the debit card receipt.

Personally, I'm not impressed with the security of either checks or debit cards. I just use the debit card to get cash at the bank's ATM and pay that way.
