Earlier this year (2009) my wife and I decided to purchase a new Tempur Pedic mattress at the Mattress Firm. The salesman did a great job and convinced us we needed the $5000 model.

Not planning on spending that much he talked us into some kind of special they had when you financed the purchase. So we filled out the little form and waited. The financing was denied. Thank goodness.

We purchased a mattress within our budget and thought nothing more of it.

On September 28, 2009 I received a letter from HC Processing Center in regards to some changes in terms and laws on my HELPcard account. Since I had never heard of this HELPcard or this account my first thought was identity theft.

I looked the company up and called them. They informed me that my account was open with a zero balance waiting on me to purchase a mattress. After some discussions with the lady I found out that in March 2010 my account will be charged an annual fee. Even though the letter states that is now against the terms.

The lady on the phone agreed to close the account and send me a letter stating the account is closed with a $0 balance.

This type of fraud should be illegal. Had the law not changed I would not have known about this account untill they tried to collect thier annual fee. I just wonder how many people have been ripped off in this manner by these companies?
