Recently the numerous shelter is charlotte nc have been filled to capacity, yes we know, however that is NO reason for the BATTERED WOMENS SHELTER to kick women especially pregnant or women with children out after 30 days knowing the situations that all of them left from. This shelter is supposed to designed for the sole purpose of hiding women and their children from very dangerous partners and to provide counseling and help the women become self-sufficient. Now you tell me how the world a woman (who may or may not have children) can be expected to get the courage to first of all leave her batterer, deal with the trauma and stress, get a job, and find an apartment all within 30 days!!!! That is complete bull#%@$ if you ask me! Unrealistic Expectations!

Most of these women have found the courage to get out of very traumatic situations, then to have to faced with the possilibility of having to go back to that same if not WORSE situation because of failing to reach these unrealistic expectations is even more stressful. I say they should re-evaluate how long they allow these women to stay because basically I see this shelter as USE-LESS to battered women who have been isolated from their families and forced not to work especailly with todays economy.

And speaking as one of these women I say we should be given more time to reach these goals. I desire to be that INDEPENDENT woman I was before I fell into such an abusive relationship, but because I failed to become that woman in 30 days I will soon have to return home to my abuser...the only difference is I now know I'm pregnant.

I just hope the right people read this who can in some way or another do something about it to change the way this shelter is run for the remaining woman there and the many woman to come. I'm afraid my time will be up soon, probably too soon for me to see in changes take place but hopefully I will atleast be alive and well to hear about them being made. Respectfully Yours, Resident of The Battered Womens Shelter.

Being that my family has dealt with this situation I am still confused. Who said you had to return to your abuser? That decision is up to you and only you. Do not let that be an excuse. Take responsiblity and stop blaming others. MY mother left my dad after 55 yrs of marriage and worked and found a way at the age of 77 years old, so do not tell me you can not find a JOB and that you HAVE to go back to your abuser! My sister left her 1st husband with two children and now she works with abused children ............ I could go on, but ONLY you can decide and if you do not wish to help yourself then give up that space and let someone else who wants to help themselves..............at least give them a chance if you do not wish to help yourself. I hope you decide your child is worth it. HMMM.........I think so, do you?

Fast forward twenty years..........what are you going to tell your adult child.......you were not WORTH IT?

What's your idea of a "reasonable" amount of time, a person or family should be allowed to stay at a temporary shelter? Six months, a year, two years, three years? It's their choice to "go back to the same if not WORSE situation". YOU may see the shelter as USE-LESS. If so, WHY are you there?
