So the year was 2006, just moved to Southern California (Northridge), finishing my Bachelors degree, wanting to start into my MBA program shortly after. Just had quit a job I was working in since moving, and was out of a job. So what to do?! Post online in hopes of scoring a real good job with a great company that would really allow me to use my "marketing" & management experience...
I received a phone call from a rep from a place called "The Landers Group" who had seen my resume and was so impressed with my background... sure... Well the appointment was set for the morning, and I was ready to go in. As I drove down Ventura Blvd, I saw the huge high rise commercial building, and though to myself "I hope this works out". Come on, its Los Angeles, Marketing, the summer of 2006, everything was making sense to me and was really excited that moving out of a small town with no growth, I finally made it in my business venture...
So I go in, find the suit, and sign in. There was another gentleman there with also a sharp suit on, and ready to go. At this point I'm thinking to myself I am ready to go to war with this guy, and this marketing position is MINE!
Well, as I go into the interview room with some guy, he didnt have much to ask, just looked at me and wanted me to explain my background, and said "GREAT". He mentioned I looked like a leader and had all the ability to do this job...... Ok...... So how bout the job? What is it?! Do I get to meet the Dogers?! Do I meet the Lakers?!
Go meet with our sales manager... HUH? Ya, go meet with out manager he said... So I went to the hall way and there was this other guy, who was literally grinning ear to ear, and said READY TO GO! I mentioned to him, where?! Well the one thing they left out was that I had to sign this waiver, and go on a little bit of a road trip with these guys to see them in action, for an "hour or so"... Well I signed the waiver, and headed down, where he asked me if it was ok to take my vehicle, sure no problem I told the guy. So we left...
As we are driving I am asking questions, I'm a little nervous, because I dont know what to expect, and I dont really like being out of my comfort area too quickly. So I asked him where we are going and what we are doing?! He mentioned it was a marketing technique they call "radius marketing". HUH?!?! I said I had never heard of this at all. He said that by taking a 3 mile radius of Dodger Stadium and driving to the community we would be MARKETING the team... Oh ok I said, and well I was thinking to myself at this point we may be going to Dodger Stadium to possibly meet with the team or team executives...... Ohhhhh boy was I wrong...
So we get to Olympic Blvd... Pretty much a dirt road, very low income community, huge Hispanic population with local businesses, and so he had me park at an Arbys.
So we were off, he said Lets go!
I was dressed in a suit, tie, and professional shoes...
It was summer, and the heat was in the high 90's if not 100's. We walked... He talked... And through the whole thing he was trying to encourage me to sell these products with him... FLAT OUT I told him "there is no way I am doing this". He backed off and literally began to sell more and more and more tickets to people walking the street.
Went to restaurants, we met with managers, we even went into sweatshops believe it or not... This is ridicules, I told the guy this is not marketing, this is a door to door sales company your working for and I'm pissed...
Its now literally 4pm, and I am sweating, walking, hurting, and EXTREMELY ANGRY.
I think he knew, and judging by my stature, he perhaps did not want to keep asking me about how I liked this company...
With out going into all the details, at this time we headed back to the office, and he had the nerve to ask me to go back upstairs with him and talk with the manager about my potential, and the experience I had... I said NO, not at all, have a great day.
He was kind enough to give me $20 for gas, but I never even asked for it, nor did I want it. I just wanted to drive back home, shower and EAT! I was starving.
I did just that, and till this day I will NEVER forget my experiance with this fake, fluke of a company... And more recently I have had calls from other companies such as DKL Marketing, The SoCal Group, all for jobs. And every single one of them turn out to be the same way, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!
