I contacted Sherry Burton at The Red Dress about a wedding dress on her website my daughter wanted to wear to her senior prom on April 1, 2009. The dress was a custom made dress and the website said to allow 6 weeks for delivery. Prom was May 16 -- a little more than 7 weeks away. Sherry told me I should have the dress by May 9. I knew that was close, but I knew where last minute alterations could be done in a day, so I ordered and paid for the dress. The dress and shipping was $358.00.

The week of May 9, I e-mailed Sherry to see how the dress was progressing. She told me it would ship that week. Friday, May 8 came and I didn't have a dress. I called Sherry and she said she didn't know where I got May 9 from, but that I'd have the dress Monday or Tuesday. Now we are really cutting close! I stayed home from work to receive the shipment so I could go get my daughter out of school to do alterations and buy shoes and accessories when the dress arrived. Tuesday night, still no dress. I contacted Sherry again. She said the dress had shipped and would be there Wednesday or Thursday. I asked for a tracking number. She said the designer had shipped the dress and she was out of town and she couldn't get a tracking number. Again, I stayed home from work to wait for the dress. Thursday night, still no dress. Sherry is no longer answering my calls or e-mails. Friday I stayed home and we went dress shopping. Saturday, prom day. No dress. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, no dress and still no contact. I've e-mailed her everyday since Saturday, May 16 to ask about getting my money back. Still no response. Do not order from this company. They will not deliver and will not talk to you.

Dear Barbara,
I was pretty upset to run accross this complaint until I scolled down and saw your
rebuttal. I really was out of town and only emails reached me,not phone calls.
I felt terrible that the dress was not picked up by you and that your daughter
did not get the dress of her dreams.A complete refund was issued to you however,
your daughter still did not get what she wanted.This was a custom dress so if she wants it for any future party's I still have it.
Again my apologies that although the dress was shipped in time,it was not picked
up in time from UPS.I'm very honest and although you can't make everyone happy all the time my customer's happiness is paramount,so I try to.

Red Dress, Morro Bay, California - Update

Okay, after I posted this message, I went to work. When I came home, there was a note in my mailbox, a "final" delivery attempt from USPS...I was told it was coming UPS, not USPS. I tracked the package and discovered it WAS shipped May 9 and arrived in Winston-Salem on May 11. The tracking information stated that delivery was attempted on May 11 and a notification was left. I stayed home ALL DAY....going no where....Monday through Thursday waiting for this package and even watched my mail be delivered to my box everyday. My postal carrier claims to have attempted delivery, but didn't or she attempted delivery to the wrong address. I have reported this to the postal service and filed a complaint. The dress was in town in time for it to be worn to prom, but I was looking for UPS and didn't even call USPS!

I have contacted Sherry and explained what happened. She has agreed to refund the full amount as soon as she has verification that the dress has been returned. I must say the only fault I now lay on her is that her designer didn't provide her or me with a tracking number so this entire nightmare could have been avoided. Something as simple as a tracking number could have prevented a teenage girl being physically ill all night worrying about what she would wear to her prom.

Also, someone commented on this, yes her website states 8 weeks, but the dress I ordered states 6 weeks. Also, if you order something and specifically need it a before a certain date (wear date in this situation) and the service provider fails to provide the promised service, they cannot hold you to a "no refund" policy.

Sorry. This is a sucky situation, but I just went to their site to check them out. They have an online return policy that states that you cannot get your money back, but you can exchange it for a different dress. If its been worn or altered, your stuck with it. Also says to wait 8 to 10 weeks for the dress if it is "custum" (lol her bad spelling, not mine.), or special ordered.

1.We at The Red Dress want you to be happy with your purchase. We will do everything to accomadate you, but because we are a small store we do not give cash refunds or credit card refunds. However,you may return your dress for an exchange of size,color or style within 10 days of receipt of goods(but please contact us asap if there is a problem).An $12.00 (domestic) replacement shipping and handling fee applies to returns and exchanges.We do not accept cancellation,once you purchase an item you accept the conditions on our return policy.Refunds are only given if there has been a mistake on our part,or we are unable to ship the item purchased.All Martin McCrea,Jeannie Nitro, custom or specially ordered dresses are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.Nataya dresses and most Jessica McClintock dresses may be exchanged However,there may be a bit of a wait if dress is not instock or size is unavailable. Most dresses will ship immediately, but please allow
8-10 weeks for custum or specially ordered dresses.Dresses that are not instock please allow
2-3 weeks..Please order ahead for that special occasion or wedding.Please measure yourself carefully to ensure that you order the correct size.

All gowns returned must have original tags still attached to dress.

Important:Please measure yourself carefully to ensure proper fit.Please order the dress in the correct size according to your measurements.
(Remember, we do not issue cash refunds or credit to your credit card,we will however exchange a dress for another within our guidelines ).
