Took my daughter to NYC for her birthday celebration in Feb 2008. Found www.thecheapapartmentsnyc.com on line and booked a one bedroom apartment near Times Square for four nights. I was assured by Izumi von Hardenberg that the apartment was non-smoking, as my daughter is asthmatic and highly sensitive to smoke and other allergens.
We checked in on our arrival date, and the next day came back to the apartment after a long day of sightseeing to find Izumi von Hardenberg and Kevin Dunning in the apartment, making note of improvements and repairs needed. Although I found this somewhat intrusive, the fact that Izumi herself was smoking a cigarette in the apartment was beyond comprehension.
They both immediately left, but the cigarette smoke (and now air freshener she sprayed to mask the smoke) was left hanging in the air. My daughter's lungs and all of our belongings were permeated with the smell. Finding the situation unacceptable, we immediately moved to nearby hotel.
After much back and forth with Kevin Dunning, they agreed to refund two out of the four days paid (as they have a "no refund for any reason" policy). Nice enough, but now 3 weeks later I have not seen a dime.
Beware of these people! They might sell you a "non-smoking" apartment, but they'll come in and smoke while you're out!
