My husband took our car in for an oil change. Simple enough but he also asked if they could determine why our "check engine" light was on. They called and said it was a heater hose which they replaced. The check engine light never went out. Once he "limped" home in the vehicle (it ran poorly once he got on the expressway) we discovered the car had a blown head gasket. The repairs are now so costly that the vehicle cannot be fixed and remains in our driveway. We were told by a mechanic in the neighborhood that the problem could not have been the result of anything EXCEPT whatever Tires Plus did to it. We called and they wanted us to bring the vehicle back in. It is 25 miles and it doesn't run!
Also we discovered on our other vehicle that while we were told that after the oil changes we had on two separate occasions that our tires were rotated. We recently went to another company for this service and were told there was no way the tires had been rotated. My husband works in Buckhead and this Tires Plus was convenient for him but we will never visit another Tires Plus anywhere!

Bad Heater Hose=Loss of Engine Coolant

#8Consumer Suggestion

Sun, October 14, 2012

Heater hoses transfer engine coolant to and from the heater core.  If coolant is leaking out of a heater hose, it doesnt take a genius to figure out the coolant is NOT all getting back to then engine.  Coolant cools the engine.  If coolant level is low, there is a very high chance of overheating the engine.  When engine overheats, the cylinder head can expand, causing damage to the head gasket, the seal located between the top and bottom sections of the engine.

The check engine light was probably illuminated due to a high engine temp code stored in the PCM. The tech read the code and found the problem to be in the heater hose.  The tech replaced the faulty hose.  The tech addressed the primary/obvious issue causing the engine to overheat.  However, who knows how long the customer drove the vehicle with it overheating prior to taking it in to the shop to be looked at.

The head gasket probably started failing long before taking it to Tire's Plus that day.  When the head gaskets start to go, coolant can leak into the cylinders, mixing with the oil, effecting engine combustion, and possibly cracking the cylinder head.  The tech may have forgotten to clear the engine code.  The check engine light doesnt just go away.  It has to be cleared.  It could be that the tech forgot to clear the code.  Or, even more plausible, the tech did clear the code, but with a defective head gasket, the vehicle immedietly began to overheat again, bringing the same code back on.

There is a good bit of missing information which the person making this complaint failed to supply, whether knowingly or unknowingly.  If a check engine light illuminates, I would never recommend blowing it off.

Raven, you have made yourself look like nothing more than an idiot.  Your supposed ASE certification in Automatic Transmissions/Transaxles obviously doesn't qualify you in Engine Performance.  I really question the validity of your supposed A2 ASE certification.

Listen first off they lied to the customer second if they did not perform the work the proper way it will cause a head gasket to blow furthermore a engine check light will not come on for a broken heater hose as the ECM will only read sensors or electrical signal that it's design to read As all vehicles are design this way and that a warning light comes on telling the drive to check there gauges OK so i my self would not let a customers vehicle leave my shop with a engine check light on knowing it would cause damage unless they sign a waver,

stating other wise as for tires plus they are none for there bad faith business practices what you may or may not know is tires plus was under other business names such as Olson tire/Morgan tire/wheel works/discount tire and since they have been sued in class action suits stemming from labor laws over charging customers or not performing work describe on a work order or not using the correct fluids recommended by the manufacturer or the proper procedures of replacing vital fluids after said work has been perform.

and most automotive repair shop that have knowledgeable A S E  certified Techs and service manger will tell you if a job is not done the correct way the out come is going to cost the customer or customers more money even a complete Los of said vehicle to them cause now the cost is more than said vehicle is worth

yes everyone should take there vehicles in for service but at the same time some can not afford it or they go some where thinking they did the work correctly but come to find out that is was not done etc,

so the question is did they cause the head gasket to blow yes why cause they lied to them ask they guys were your go if a check light stays on when the problem is fix they will tell you the light will be off and stay that way unless they did not fix it right or they lied so the fact's speak for them self tires plus has over 500 complaints and out of those complaints i have been to court on a 100 of them letting the judge know that tires plus so called mechanics shouldn't be attempting said work as they are not qualified or have any experience.

so are you going to tell me your going to let someone work on your vehicle who can not tell you why your check light is still on let alone telling you what they told them no you would not as they only care if they made the quota for that day and on Sunday to meet there total goal compared to a shop who takes pride in what they do and making sure there customers are getting the best service& pricing cause with out those two you don't have jack.

Get your facts stragiht Raven A S E level 2 automotive tech

Raven A S E level 2 automotive tech. I suggest you get your facts straight before calling me a liar. The author of the rip off complaint paid to have a check engine light diagnosed. They dianosed it as a heater hose. I am not disputing that. The author is blaming tires plus for causing the head gasket to fail and I said their is no way they could have done anything to cause it to fail when they were working on her car. That is what I said in my comment. Before you call somebody a liar you beter make sure you can back it up. By the way before acusing sombody of not taking care of their car you better make sure that is the case. I had my car serviced by Monro Muffler Brake and Service and Michel Tires Plus where I live at. I have always followed their recomendations on what I should do to maintain my car. My head gasket failure was not due to bad maintence. But it failed at 160,000 miles.

well first of all toolman you have no clue what you are talking about as i am a master A S E level 2 automotive tech and i have seen first hand that a coolant hose cause a engine light to come on and since i have seen entry level so called mechanics screw things up just like this and then some as tires plus use to be with Morgan tire wheel work etc as most of there so called mechanics are not A S E certified and if they are they are just book smart, as another factor they could of broken a coolant sensor as that will make a vehicle run poorly cause of it and i my self have a vehicle with over 300k and live were are winters are very cold and have not had a blown head gasket so your information is in correct futher more your just a tool who dose not no s**t about fixing vechicles to get the most miles out of any vehicle oil coolant and check ups anyone can have there vehicle last them for more than 15yrs.

No way they caused that part to fail

Their is nothing Tires Plus could have done to cause the head gasket to fail. It is common for this part to fail on older cars that have about 200,000 to 300,000 miles on them. I have heard of some prematurely failing but their is no way they caused that damage to your car. It usually costs around $1,000.00 up to $2,000.00 to replace the head gasket. It is up to you if you want to fix the car or look for another car.

basic preventative maintenance

#8Consumer Comment

Sun, March 25, 2012

It is foolish to continue to operate a vehicle with the check engine warning light on. Don't blame others for your failure to observe basic preventative maintenance procedures. The head gasket was probably blown before it was taken to Tires Plus. Did you tell your mechanic that you continued to operate the vehicle with the check engine light on?
