Bought a Toshiba L455D-S5976 in May.  The screen broke when opining the computer in September, 4 months later.  Returned unit to Toshiba Depot for under warranty repair only to be told that this was "physical damage" and was not covered under warranty.  The repair would be $300, nearly as much as the laptop cost in May.

I asked to speak with the initial depot rep's supervisor and she said she has no supervisor.  She transferred me to Customer Relations where I got the same story.  That rep even said that the "physical damage" was not caused by us, but was still not covered under the standard 1 year warranty.

This is indeed a product defect and I cannot understand why Toshiba would hide behind their "physical damage" language.  The second rep also said there was no one higher than her for me to talk to, that she was the final word.  Neither rep showed any concern about a 4 month old product breaking at no fault of the user and just stuck to their company script.  I even tried to negotiate the repair cost only to be told that it was fixed at $300.

I have been ripped off by Toshiba not standing behind their defective product under warranty.  This was easily seen when the second rep even told be we had done nothing wrong but the warranty would not cover the repair.  Reputable companies stand behind their products and do the right things by customers.  Toshiba has shown me that they are not a reputable, ethical company.
