Complaint Review: Touro College letter of Appeal to President Bernard Lander

Letter of Appeal to:

Dear Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, President of Touro College,

Over the past few years, I have had some time to reflect on my life - my past, as well as my future. I have thought about where I have been and where I am going - my successes, as well as my failures. In retrospect, while there are some aspects of my life that I am extremely proud of. Considering my current credentials, my future appears to be without many prospects. I can't find the words to describe how terrified this realization makes me feel. This pervasive thought, keeps me up at night, and occupies practically every hour of my day. A handful of college credits stand between me and a promising future. I therefore, respectfully request a chance to complete my Bachelor's degree at Touro College - I respectfully ask for a second chance.

What does a college degree mean to me? On a personal level, it's a chance to grow, improve, gain knowledge and increase my understanding of the world around me; an opportunity to accomplish something that will make me proud. A college education will give me skills that I will use for the rest of my life, and will open doors that will otherwise remain closed. In this rapidly changing global economy, a college degree will afford me the opportunity to compete with others on an equal footing. A college degree will allow me a chance at a career. Finally, it will grant me the opportunity to become a productive, self-reliant member of society, and will put me in a better position to extend a helping hand to others in need.

Maimonidies lists eight levels of Tzedakah in order of priority; helping a person become self-sufficient represents the highest level - the highest degree of righteousness. I respectfully appeal to you and ask to consider my circumstances and grand me a second chance at a better life.
