I recently had a call from some scam artists named CAMCO (Captial Acquisition and Management Co) trying to recollect on a debt I settled with another collection agency 9 years ago. I placed a fraud alert on my credit reports for which I was granted a free credit report from Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax. I received my credit report from Trans Union and saw a credit report request from CAMCO. So Trans Union just handed them over my credit report. Listed on all Trans Union credit reports are the FULL account numbers of all of your accounts. At least Experian just displays the first few digits of the account (not the whole thing). So now they have all of my open credit card account numbers thanks to Trans Union. That must be why they only deal with Trans Union (the request was not on my Experian report).

I called Trans Union to complain and they were nasty and unconcerned. It was my problem and not theirs. Nice to have them watching over your financial security.

I read all the mis-information on this board from "add new accounts to your bureau with the metro 2 format" to "bureaus give out your account numbers.

NO BUREAU....NONE....NADA lists the full account number of any account on the file. This has not been done since the middle 1980's. Either the beginning or end of every account number listed is truncated.

Don't let these scam artists hook you in to their money making schemes by "advising" you of things that simply don't happen.

Well, you will be glad to know there are things you can do to put an abrupt END to this problem of yours. First, you need to file a letter of dispute with CAMCO. Demand they prove this debt is yours by providing you a copy of any note, contract or other doccument which bears your signature. Mail this by certified, return receipt mail to ensure proof of delivery for your records. CAMCO will more than likely reply with a general letter stating they are "investigating" your dispute; just wait.

Give them their alloted 30 days. If they have failed to provide proof of this debt, mail a follow up letter in the exact same manner you did the first. Restate you dispute and advise them of your intent to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission as well as your State Banking Department. Also advise them that, if need be, you will seek redress in civil court (you will sue them)and hold them accountable for their willful non-compliance.

If after the second alloted 30 days, they have STILL failed to provide proof of the debt, file the complaints. For a minimal fee, you can file in small claims court. Keep all correspondece the two of you have exchanged, even envelopes! You will need these items to win your case. Winning means you are up to $1,000.00 richer! Good luck and for all the forms and support you will need,
