Travelocity Seat Assignment Extra Charges , Internet

Booked flights through Travelocity and could not make seat assignments until I paid for the reservations.  At that time, was informed that "seat assignments not available at this time, contact the airline."   Contacted Air Trans and was told that "we can't make seat assignments for Travelocity reservations."  Turns out that my choices now are:
1. check in 24 hours in advance and take what is available.  Since we are flying December 19th, that pretty much guarantees middle seats for 5 hours of flying.
2. pay $6 per person per flight (and it is a connecting flight) for the "privilege" of getting seat assignments for a December flight in September.
This scam adds $36 to the cost of the tickets--making Travelocity more expensive than the next service.

Also took over an hour on the phone to straighten it out and then get my "privilege" seats.

Will not fly Air Trans or use Travelocity again.
