As others have reported here, I had a clean cut young kid (17-19 years old) come to the door just after school was out today saying that he lived in my neighborhood and that his baseball team (through AAU) was going to nationals in Hawaii and he was raising money to pay for it. He had quite a few jokes to tell, but really fell down when it came time to tell me how the whole scam worked. I was VERY skeptical and asked a thousand questions about his team, his coach, his stats, etc. In the end he wanted $48, but I only gave him $20 (in a check, which I'll stop payment on).

He told me that it was tax deductible if I gave the books to a children's organization (so I told him the name of the local orphanage) and that his mom was a CPA and told him that it was ok as long as the organization was a 501(c)3. He said that the comapny Tuscan Readers Services then donates money to his team after they send the books to the organization.

He even "signed" the back of the receipt, telling me that he would be famous someday and here was his autograph. HA!
