Complaint Review: U-Haul

U-Haul Locking me out of my "Fully Paid Storage Space" telling me it's for security purposes. St. Catharines, Ontario

I have been renting a self storage unit from this Uhaul location going on my second month.
I had no problems accessing my storage space for the first month but the last time I went there
with some people that had come along to purchase some of my items. These were people had answered an ad I placed for items for sale and drivin from another city to see the items.

Upon arriveal to my unit I was shocked to find that UHAUL had double locked. In other words they put their own lock in the second lock hole to block me from entry.
Needless to say I was not impressed and went first to an employee outside asking what's going on here..?? My rents paid and now I find myself locked out.
They informed me I had to go inside and talk to them.

When I got inside (very irked) I found a long line of people ahead of me and had to stand in line
for fifteen minutes for my turn. The people I had brought with me we're left hanging wondering where I had gone?? When I finally got to the desk I asked what was was going on???
They informed me it was for security reasons and gave me a key. I informed them I didn't want their security (they don't insure your items anyhow so what use is that to me??) and if they wanted a second lock put on it I would use my own not thiers and not have to suffer this type of inconvienence. I was told I couldn't do that.
I went back to my unit finished up, returned the key of thiers and left in disgust.

I went home and pulled out my contract and read it completely through and found that NO_WHERE in my contract did it say they had the right to lock me out of my unit when my rent was PAID IN FULL.

I then took my contract back to UHaul and asked them to show me where in my contract it stated that they have authorization to be able to lock me out of my own PAID IN FULL rental unit.

Keep in mind for the first thirty days of my rental they did not do this to me.


The individual I was  speaking with stated he couldn't show me, and replied once again that it was for security reasons, so I once again stated that if they wanted two locks I'd use my own (IT'S MY SPACE I PAID FOR IT) and once again was told I could not do that.

Another representative listening in then said to me if you don't like it we'll unload your storage unit right now and put it on the street. This ramped up my disgust even more and I asked to speak with the manager.
I was told he did not work on Saturdays but there was another person in charge whom I could speak with.

I went to this person and explained the whole ordeal once again. I handed him my contract and asked him to show me where it stated they could lock me out. He couldn't! Once again I got same security reason answer.. my reply was the same.. that I didn't want them doing that.

NOW here's a real kicker for ya.. He then stated if you pay us more money for 24 hour access we won't put it on... Ah HA now the truth comes out.. It's just a scam to put you at an inconvienence if you won't take their 24 hour access.. (You have an option to take 24 hour access and I did not want or need that), and stated that if they wanted to double lock it during non-business hours I have no problem with that, but the locks should be removed by them (why should I be inconvienced) during the hours that I had contractually PAID IN FULL for.)

It was clear I was going to get NO_WHERE with these people at this level so I asked for a HEAD OFFICE contact name to get this issue resolved.
AMAZINGLY when I asked this GUY who would not give me his name said "That would be me" I said no I wanted someone above him.. once again his reply was that would be me.. He stated he ran all of Ontario.. This guy was obviously lying through his teeth. In disbelief and disgust I left.

I then contacted UHAUL on the telephone and was givin a HEAD OFFICE contact name.

I paid for this unit in FULL. They have nothing in writing giving them the authorization to lock me out or inconvienence me in any way.

I found them very arrogant with a we could care less about your complaints attitude. CUSTOMER service and satisfaction  "ZERO".

My five star recommendation to all who read this... BEWARE
