On August 30, 2006 @ 12:13 PM. I rented a U-Haul from Romeo Rent-All Located in Romeo, Michigan. The Truck was $19.99, dep. $100, and 50 miles, for a total of $180.00. I used the truck to go from my storage unit to my house and I put 30 miles on it. I worked all night so I could get the truck back. August 31 2006 @ 6:30 am, early this morning, I filled up the tank and returned it putting the keys in the drop box. I received a call that I owed more money to U-Haul. I went straight down there and asked them about it. The employee Dan says " you owe us for 163 miles at .80 cents per mile, and you did not fill up the gas tank so that's and additional $30.00 plus $4.00 per gallon. He was impossible to deal with and stubborn to not even think that there was an error in his paperwork. As far as the gas he did not even turn on the key and had no report to how many gallons of gas was put in the truck.

U-Hauls Magic Act!

I am still waiting on my money. Sure U-Haul said they would return my money, but they have not done it yet! I have contacted them in 4 phone calls, 15 e-mails, and that is after they said they would give me the "benefit of the doubt". I contacted the BBB and they did not respond, so the BBB said "sorry they did not respond, there is nothing we can do". Tell everybody you know stay away from u-haul and even put it on a shirt!

On Friday September 10, I E-mailed U-haul customer service, again. I had first called the 800 number and was on hold for 50 mins, and left a message with a girl. Then I E-mailed them then next day, when I did not hear from them, and got a responce in an E-mail two days later saying I will be contacted in 48 hours. A week later that friday around noon. I received a E-mail later that day. And U-Haul did find that there were some things that was going on and that let to the validity to my claim. So, although it did not get handled in 48hrs. as stated.

I was very happy with the return of my money, rather than a bill above and beyond.

Complaining to U-Haul is a waste of time!

I had a problem with U-Haul trying to rip me off, too (see my report #210063). The only response to my complaint to the corporate office via their website was a promise to investigate the matter and contact me in two business days. (I wonder why I haven't heard from them yet?) I'll keep this in mind the next time I need to rent a truck.

Like Steve said, ALWAYS drop it off in person, and go over everything together, face to face, like mileage, fuel level, damage, etc. Get a receipt and double-check what it says. NEVER let these people see a credit card, even if they say its only to verify your identity. They might overcharge it! Always pay them cash only.

Good luck on future moves and try not to use U-Haul in the future!

This is why you should NEVER drop a vehicle after hours.

ALWAYS drop in person, face to face. Get a reciept.

The gas can be explained by a gas thief, but the extra mileage cannot be explained. Someone either read it wrong or checked in the wrong truck.

Did you use a credit card or prepay with cash? If they do not have your credit card info you have nothing to worry about.

Also keep in mind that they are not an actual U-Haul location, they are an authorized dealer. Big difference in the way busines is done.

You should go to the U-Haul website and file a complaint with the corporate office.

Did you double check the truck number?

It's not just the gas, but where did the extra 133 miles come from? Is it possible he wrote down the wrong numbers when he checked the truck in? Or checked in the wrong truck?

As far as the gas, I would imagine the local U-Haul dealer is popular with gas thieves, what with all those gas-filled trucks sitting around.
