My mother lives with me and I have power-of-attorney for things such as this. A letter was received addressed to her from UBS. It had a claim number and  said it was a FINAL PRIZE NOTIFICATION .

Also enclosed was a check from Regional Maagement Inc. for $4270.00 that was supposedly deducted from the total prize winnings of $565,000.00 and il was to be used to pay the non-residental tax of $3,550.00.

She was  to contact a Tony Carter who was a "claim agent and he would instruct her how to pay the tax to  tax agent. The $3,550 was supposed to come out of the enclosed check. I called USB and gave them the information in the letter and phne number. They called the number for the claim agent, Tony Carter and found it to be a suspicious contact and veriied it was likely fraudulent.

I then checked with my local bank to see if the enclosed check as any good. While they verified that there was money in the account to cover the check amount, there was no guarantee that the check would be cashed. Therefore, the bank would not cash the check.

Most likely what would happen is that the claim agent would try to get you to put the $3,550 on a credit card to expidite the process of getting your big winnings and when you went to cash the check, the bank wouldn't cash it. This is absolutely a scam....be very careful.
