Dr. Don Curtis DDS Attending Faculty over saw my dentist Miss. Polenskya, who is now graduated, during a 2 year long and painful and costly dental process that I did not want when I originally went to UCSF. I wanted bridges. They talked me into caping all my teeth with porcelain caps with a gold foundation and designed my caps so the partials would ride on my teeth and not my gums ensuring me of a far greater and enduring results, that which I have ever had previous to coming to UCSF.

You see I had some very bad dentistry experiences in the past. Moreover, I felt they were the experts so I agreed because they told me the partial claps would be hidden and their plan was far more advanced than that of previous work, again ensuring me of undetectable and long lasting results.

First, the top caps in the front are all wrong. You can see very dark areas reaching around from the back of the caps from the dark silver colored gold they used. Which makes my teeth look dirty.

Second, the caps chipped almost immediately. Which they said was normal! Now, 4 years later the partials also broke and they (Doctor Curtis) are taking the wrong posture looking for justification as to why it's my fault. Claiming teeth grinding as the reason they do not have to stand on the work.

Now they want another %2220.00 This is an outrage! One would think that a prestigious university such as UCSF would not resort to such tactics. Why is it so hard to get humans to do the right thing?

UCSF Dr. Curtis Final Report

#15Author of original report

Sat, September 01, 2007

It has been sometime since I communicated any progress and there has been a mouthful. Between starting a new business, caring for others and such, I now am making the time to share all that has transpired. I apologize to anyone who may have been following this report on line and ask for your understanding and request your indulgence for a short while longer to share with you all, the power of this report.

Since my last update, I have been interacting with Dr. Curtis and I am pleased to report an astounding turn around in as far as the communication between us. It seems to be clear that we understand each other and my needs are being satisfied as they arise. I realize my report was a little harsh as I was upset at the lengths needed to get what I had coming in the first place. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with the results of my efforts and I have no regrets nor do I hold any ill will toward Dr. Curtis.
Dr. Curtis and I now enjoy a very relaxed and trusting relationship. Dr. Curtis has not only restored his reputation but, in my opinion, has honorably improved his stature with a sincere kindness that I frankly had not expected but realizes how invaluable Dr. Curtis/s style enhances his professional demeanor.

I am very happy to have had this opportunity to see this side of Dr. Curtis and encourage others who have experienced less than the professional results and expectations to give Dr. Curtis the pleasure to care for your dental needs.

I wish to thank Mr. Ed Magedson for the guidance and for having a place to go when there was no other. If it were not for Ed's courage, I would not have found mine. I also wish to thank all the folks at UCSF Postgraduate Prosthodontics for there patience and kindness throughout this renewing time.

Sincerely Yours, Jackson Cuevas

How dare you wave a flag integrity at me? Integrity is not an instrument of convenience. If you read my RipOff Report and have an above room temperature I.Q. then you must know this will not fly with me!

The actions you suggest have already failed. You take the liberty of telling me how to act when my complaint clearly illustrates several examples of UCSF's irresponsible and unprofessional responses to all my previous expressions of dissatisfaction and concerns.

I have always been a gentleman in all my previous affairs with UCSF and maintain this today. I have never acted improperly toward any Staff Member or Associate. Nor have I spoken in an irreverent manor to anyone at UCSF. The information you have is inaccurate in regards to my manor thus you are moving in the wrong direction.

When I told Becky and Beth of my intent to protest and demonstrate they are the ones that acted hostile. Responding as if I was threatening them is wrong and the direction you need attention. Screaming and becoming curt with me. I calmly stopped the conversation and emphasized what my actions would be if UCSF failed to respond to my formal complaint.

If my demand for restitution is misunderstood then you must read this entire RipOff report again, without prejudice.

It has never been my intent to act harmful or violent. My statement in reference to Doctor Curtis "being better off dealing with Satin then messing with me" is not hostile. It is simply an expression of my resolve. The lack of decorum in previous attempts expressed by the very nature of this RipOff report, dictates the necessity to be take seriously! Stay focused-end this!

Concerning the integrity of the UCSF Dental Practices

#15UPDATE Employee

Tue, February 06, 2007

After reading this report, there are a few things about the UCSF Prosthodontic Practice (and UCSF Dental Practices in general) that one must take into consideration:

1) UCSF is the #1 Dental School in the country. This being said, any institution cannot achieve this without excellent educational standards and more than excellent patient care.

2) It is the UCSF School of Dentistry's policy to ensure that any work done by a student is checked and approved by their supervising faculty member. This said, every faculty member at UCSF that is put in a position to check a students work, as in the case of Dr. Curtis here, is considered an expert in their field. If the faculty member feels that the work is inadequate, he will have the student re-do the work at no additional charge to the patient, or, alternately, he will re-do the work himself, at no additional charge to the patient.

3) Being an industry leader, the UCSF Dental Practices hold their work to the highest of standards, at all times. As an employee of the Dental School at UCSF, I feel perfectly comfortable getting my dental work done (and I do get it done here) by the faculty and students, as do the majority of our staff and faculty.

4) As with any dental or medical work, proper and careful after-care must be taken to insure the results of the procedure. It can be common for teeth grinding to destroy dental work, especially if it is new. The longevity of any dental work cannot be completely guaranteed to last through anything, especially the grinding of teeth.

5) Having worked with Dr. Curtis professionally, I can attest to the fact that he is one of the most caring and thorough people in the school. Any claims that he is dishonest or trying to "rip you off" are highly unlikely, and most probably unfounded.

6) The UCSF School of Dentistry sees all of its dental practices as "services to the community." This said, it would be against the school's nature to treat you in the manner that you claim to have been treated. I see this as more of a misunderstanding rather than an attempt by the UCSF School of Dentistry, the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, or Dr. Curtis to inconvenience you.

Having said all of this, I do feel for your situation. I personally know both Becky and Beth, and I know that neither of them are unreasonable people. I suggest that you calmly and rationally speak with them about your situation. Ask them to pull your chart and review the history of work that has been done, and then work with them and Dr. Curtis to form a plan to fix it. Remember: this is something that needs to be done for you. If you take the offensive, it is less likely that you are going to see the results that you want, rather, they will view you as hostile and refuse to help you at all.

Please go back to the Prosthodontics Department and try to work with them to solve your problem, rather than making demands that will go unfulfilled.

Sincerely,
A Concerned UCSF School of Dentistry Employee

I called UCSF this morning and spoke with Becky, one of the two receptionists, and I asked to speak with Beth, following up on the previous information that everyone was waiting for her to return to work today. Becky said Beth was on another call would I like to wait? I said I would and was on hold for 15 minutes and finally called back and Becky said that Dr. Curtis was going to handle this him and would be returning my call this afternoon. When I asked for a time, she could not answer properly. She again said he'll (Dr. Curtis) will call me back this afternoon, sometime. I said I would be expecting his call. True to the letter of incompetence, further demonstrating any resolve what so ever, no call came.

At 4:45 pm, I called. Beth answered.. She said Dr. Curtis was not available. In addition, that he was trying to make sense of it all. She continued by inquiring with me as to the content of my Rip Off report, saying that she wanted to understand, did I really feel this way? My response was do I really feel this way? I have not even begun to describe how I feel about this. I further informed Beth that I meditated for days before filing this Rip Off report to discipline myself to remove any emotional content ,in the interest of accuracy, so I could remain objective. I asked her what her part in all of this. She said she was trying to understand and make sense of it all. Beth and I had enjoyed a good report up until now and I miss that. I have a perfect grasp of the English language, and thought she was an intelligent woman, so what was there to understand? Beth became agitated and began screaming at me. I raised my voice to stop her rampage and calm her down.

I declared a formal position that if my demands of restitutions are not met to my total satisfaction by Thursday at the close of business I would demonstrate and picket! Further, all of UCSF would be made aware of this RIP Off. I am going to inform the surrounding businesses and residence as well. I also warned her that UCSF and Dr. Curtis Attending Resident would be at the top of the national quarterly release of the Rip Off publication reaching millions, and that ignoring me was not going to make me go away this time!
She admitted she did not know how to respond to that and would inform Dr. Curtis. I reminded her they have until the close of business on Thursday to comply!

To Whom It May Concern,

As with any new situation, a good understanding of the problem is the first step in finding equitable resolution. Failure to recognize the fundamental elements of the issue as well as the final objective is an exercise in futility. UCSF agreed to provide full reconstruction of my teeth with the assurance that the results would be well designed and extremely durable. In exchange, I paid UCSF a considerable sum of money and spent two years suffering the pain and discomfort associated with the ensuing dental procedures.

The finished product ultimately disintegrated after a mere three years due to second-rate treatment, slipshod work, the use of substandard materials and poorly designed partials. UCSF's refusal to accept responsibility for this ultimate failure is astounding. Their stance is completely unprofessional and unethical and illustrates the severity of incompetence within the UCSF postgraduate Prosthodontics department!

Prior to my initial appointment at UCSF postgraduate Prosthodontics department, I had planned to have permanent bridges installed. I had two significant reasons for wanting these. One reason was that only a few of my healthy teeth would need to be drilled and ground down in order to place crowns on them and the other reason was to avoid the need for partials in general. The dentists at UCSF did not agree with me. Following a comprehensive oral examination, they presented me with a completely different oral restoration plan. It included realignment of my bite; ten gold-foundation porcelain crowns having grooves for partials to rest upon with hidden clasps attaching them to the crowns. Dr. Polonskaya informed me these clasps would make the partials virtually undetectable. By this method of restoration instead of the permanent bridges that I had wanted, UCSF ensured that the results would be far superior, more durable and would last indefinitely!

Following the crown installations, I could clearly see dark silver-colored gold foundation reaching from the backside of the front crowns, making my teeth appear black or dirty. I am a perfectionist and it is my intrinsic nature to demand excellence. I pointed this out to my dentist, Dr. Polonskaya, and expressed my dissatisfaction to her. It was appalling hearing her cavalier response and condescending tone. I was told, ?You cannot see that from a reasonable distance and it does not look that bad." as though my concerns were unfounded and my expectations unreasonable. Unfortunately, the dark areas wrapping around from the backside of these front crowns are visible to me, yet this was NEVERED addressed!

Dr. Polonskaya then informed me that instead of using the hidden clasps, as originally planned, they would be using standard clasps instead, in favor of a shorter waiting period. She continuously reassured me that the partials would be long lasting and mostly undetectable.

A few weeks later, my new partials arrived. Dr. Polonskaya adjusted my new partials to fit exactly to my capped ridged crowns and bite. This completed the reconstruction process for my teeth.

Within a few days, the corner edges of 90% of the new crowns had chipped off, against the partials, while eating. I immediately contacted Dr. Polonskaya and informed her of the problem and once again, her demeanor was off-hand disregarding my concerns. She said, ?It was normal, and I should let her know if it got worse or became painful?.

The next time I saw her was at my follow up appointment to inspect and adjust my partials. Dr. Polonskaya informed me that everything was fine and the work looked good. Dr. Curtis concurred.

I find it curious that the follow up examination shortly after completion never mentioned the chipped gold crowns that Dr. Polonskaya and I had discussed earlier. Yet when I have a resulting component failure, suddenly I must of ground them up and in no manor purposed by me would have merit to carry the slightest consideration!

During the following two or three years I discovered the clasps where breaking off. First the top partial broke, with minute consequence. Eventually the bottom partial clasps broke on both ends. Dr. Curtis greeted me with skepticism and derision. Reluctantly repairing the claps on the top partial, this failed in a week's time! His posture was truly astounding. I was flabbergasted. The lack of willingness to do anything was appalling. Someone new had filled Dr. Polonskaya position. Sorry I do not know his name. In any event, he said he would rally with Dr. Curtis to at lest repair the bottom partial (I requested new replacements) and would call in a week or two. I left several messages regarding this and no one ever returned my calls.

Finally, the bottom partial snapped in half while I was eating! I arrived at UCSF to find an extenuating Dr. Curtis. I watched as he searched relentlessly to elude the apparent painful denial of the right thing to do. Pitifully throwing me a bone hoping I will go away quietly. Laying fault with me verse-excepting responsibility. Dr. Curtis tenacity is misplaced. Obstinate that grinding my teeth is the sole elucidation is ludicrous.

Directives to have my teeth cleaned by your hygienist were unnecessary and a pitiful attempt toward distraction. She cleaned me teeth in less time than it takes me to brush, at a cost of over $100.00. What was that all about?

I took the remaining bottom partial to a dental lab. There I learned they had never heard of a partial breaking at the metal foundation while eating. I was told normally either people drop them or step on them or an accident involving a freak hit to the jaw is how such a break occurs. None of which happened with me. This is an obvious poor design.

I now know why dentist are rarely revered and much feared! I can endure the disrespect to a point. I draw the line at flagrant disregard for common decency. The fast food, 7/11, flea market, Persian bizarre manor in which you have chosen to handle yourselves does NOT set you free. It makes a mockery of descent, honest, hard working Americans. I trusted you and took heed in your word. In return for my devotion, UCSF has demonstrated total and complete disregard of my welfare. On every occasion, UCSF responded with contempt and disrespect. UCSF has been denigrating and abusive. THIS ENDS NOW! You will take me seriously! You will be responsibility for your work and your word! I am the consumer watch me! I am going to show the public a prestigious university that lies to its clients and cheats them out of their money. Deceives and refuses to take responsibility of there own design! I will show the world that UCSF adamantly refuses to stand behind there work! I will show them a bitter misguided leader whom is more interested in being right than arriving at the truth of responsibility! I will show them a negligent soulless leader whom would be better off dealing directly with Satan, than messing with me!

END!

As with any new situation, a good understanding of the problem is the first step in solving it. The failure to understand and procure a resilient and well-designed model, as promised, is nothing more than an exercise in futility. It offend my very nature, to shun responsibility altogether is unprofessional. It is unethical. Lest Immoral! Where is UCSF's code of ethics? Pardon my candor. UCSF postgraduate prosthodontic department is incompetent!

Arriving at UCSF postgraduate prosthodontic it was my intention to acquire bridges. Following a comprehensive diagnosis, you presented me with a complete restoration procedure assuring me of far superior results than bridges. Too included realigning my bite, gold foundation porcelain crowns (on all my natural teeth) w/special groves so the upper and lower partials could rest on the crowns and not my gums. Hidden claps would secure the partials directly to the new crowns, thus be virtually undetected. This would be very expensive and painful, taking two or more years to complete. Given support to justify your assessment, I agreed.

Following the crown installations, I was somewhat despondent. I could clearly see dark silver colored gold foundations between all the crowns, making my teeth appear black or dirty. I have an intrinsic nature and I am a perfectionist yet UCSF slipshod attitude was appalling. As thou, I was being too critical. You can not see it from a reasonable distance and it does not look that bad." However, I could see it and that is important to me.

Dr. Polonskaya informed me the claps would be typical, in favor of a shorter waiting period, reassuring me the partials would be abiding and mostly unseen.
A few weeks pasted until my new partials arrived. I came in and Dr. Polonskaya adjusted them to the crowns. Checking my bite and thus completing my reconstruction.

During the next three days when I ate the corners of the crowns chipped off. I called Dr. Polonskaya straightaway. Her demeanor was cavalier. Stating it was normal, and I should watch if it worsened or was painful. I came in for my follow up appointment and partial adjustment. Dr. Polonskaya informed me that everything was ok. Dr. Curtis concurred.

Do you not find it curious upon inspection of a couple or three weeks, chipped gold crowns were not even mentioned, noted, or commented on? Yet when I have a resulting component failure, suddenly I must of ground them up and in no manor purposed by me would even have merit to carry the slightest consideration?

In the following two or three years I discovered the claps where breaking off. First the top partial broke, with minute consequence. Eventually the bottom partial claps on both ends broke. Dr. Curtis greeted me with skepticism and derision. Reluctantly repairing the claps on the top partial, this broke off in a week's time! His posture was truly astounding. I was flabbergasted. The lack of willingness to do anything was appalling. Someone new had filled Dr. Polonskaya position. Sorry I do not know his name. In any event, he said he would rally with Dr. Curtis to at lest repair the bottom partial as well and would call in a week or two. I left several messages regarding this and no one ever returned my calls.

Finally, the bottom partial snapped in half, while I was eating. I arrived, to find an extenuating Dr.

Directives to have my teeth cleaned by your hygienist were unnecessary.

Obviously a poor design.

I can endure the disrespect to a point. I draw the line at flagrant disregard for common decency. The fast food, 7/11, flea market, Persian bizarre manor in which you have chosen to handle yourselves does NOT set you free. It makes a mockery of descent, honest hard working Americans. You will take me seriously. You will be responsibility for your work and your word. I am the consumer watch me! I am going to show them a prestigious university that lies to its clients and cheats them out of their money. Refuses to take responsibility and stand behind there work. I will show them a bitter misguided leader whom is more interested in being right than arriving at the truth! I will show them a negligent soulless leader whom would be better off dealing directly with Satan, than messing with me!
