Ugly Duckling sells 'AS-IS' cars because it's more profitable. I'd be curious as to how their lot boys are able to do diagnostic work on the engine, transmission, electrical and air conditioning systems in order to complete their 'checklist'. You didn't think they had a full time professional mechanic on staff did you? Professional mechanics train and get their ASE certifications in all these automotive areas before quality auto shops will hire them.
The 'Duck' knows that when people are down on their luck (and credit) and are desperate for a vehicle they'll jump at almost anything.
Once you get suckered into one of these cars and have it break down your troubles are only just beginning. They'll have the lot boy take you to the cleaner on repairs.
They don't call 'em Lassies for nothing.
