I rented a trailer to carry my belongings after just getting out of the navy, I bought the insurance and was told it will cover my belongings and the trailer if anything gets damaged.

Well on November 2, 2007 I was rear ended by a lifted Ford F-250 the guy "was not paying attentiong" and those were his quotes he told the cop. I immediatly called my insurance company because of the impact of the trailer being hit, it smashed into my car barely missing my son. Needless to say it was my sons 1st birthday that day. All of my belongings, my bed dresser, clothes, family heirlooms, his crib clothes and toys were either on the interstate or smashed up inside. It was late at night about 9:30 p.m. My insurance company got all the information they needed and everything was good.

I called a friend to drive 3 hours to come get me because I had no where else to go and couldn't drive my car with my son it cause i had a smashed back end no back window and it wasn't safe. I called Republic Western Insurance Company (which is associated with Uhaul) and filed a claim the next morning. It was a weekend so nothing really could be said or done. Monday morning rolls along and I get a hold of someone and they ask me to take pictures and do an inventory of all my belongings and prices I paid for everything.

So again I had a friend take me to the tow yard where the trailer was towed (there was no way on god's green earth I could pull that thing because it was deemed unsafe by the tow guy and the shell came off the frame). I took lots of pictures of things that were not salvageable. Ashley furniture bed set (not cheap) computers, dishes, phones, crib etc. I made a detail list and had to pay to get it taken into another uhaul truck to take to the dump yard. I emailed the lady the pictures, my list and prices. She said everything was great said she had to reduce it because once something is taken out of a store the value depreciates. Ok understandable. She called me back 2 days later gave me an amount and faxed me all the paper work to sign to recieve the check. Everything went smoothly without any problems.

I used that money to A fly my mom out to California to do the drive to Wisconsin with me because I was horrified to drive, B to ship off a couple boxes to go home (I didn't have much left to ship) When I finally got to Wisconsin I went out to replace all my stuff.

Now 8 months later, I recieve a notice of attempt to collect debt from a Company called Recovery Process or something like that. I called and the guy was out of town who handles the Uhaul stuff, and of course no one else can answer any questions cause he is the only one authorized. I called 5 times and left 4 messages. So last wednesday I call again, and I finally get through to the guy. He said the Insurance filed a claim and they want to get their money (it is in the amount of the money given to me for my damaged goods, which I recived because of the insurance I got).

I asked the guy why they wanted to take money back from me, he said they need my insurance (personal insurance) information to get the money. I told him I didn't understand and he said "they do it all the time". It still wasn't making any sense to me he said if you read your contract, it doesn't cover your belongings. Then I said why would they have given me the money and granted my claim if that wasn't in the contract. He hung up on me, no joke straight up hung up got a dial tone and all. So I am furious at this time.

I called back immediatly and the guy who answered the phones, (who usually directs you to who ever) answers. I told him I was hung up on, gave him the account number he put me on hold, he comes back and said "he is going to get in touch with the client and see what they want" I asked why was it neccesary to hang up on me and he said he will get back to you mid week next week. And then he hung up the phone on me.

I still haven't heard anything from them, Not sure why 8 months later they want to get this money back, not sure why they don't get the money from the guy who hit me, Not sure who hired those guys because they aren't very professional.

I wouldn't go through U-haul again if my life depended on it. If I do a big move I will sell everything that isn't valuable to me and buy new stuff when I get home. I recommend going through Budget Rental trucksor hiring someone to do. Uhaul is unprofessional, and rude. I wish I would have read the complaints on BBB and on here before doing business with uhaul. They even have employees saying "yes we rip off people and we are given incentive pay to do so.
