I didn't get very far in my dealing with UHaul regarding an in city rental. Luckily, I did have other options, but they're practices seem as close to fraudulent as you can get.

I called them to rent a truck for an local move I needed to make on June 30th, 2002. After speaking awhile, they informed me that my "reservation" was not a guarantee that a truck would be available for me on that day. HUH? Then they said, if I was lucky enough to get a truck on that date, it didn't "necessarily" mean it would be at a local dealership. It could be anywhere in Clark County. Now, Clark County in Nevada is enormous, covering at least 300 miles. This means that I could concievably have to travel hundreds of miles just to get the truck. Since they charge $.49 per mile on local rentals, my inexpensive truck rental (that I might not even GET) could conceivably cost me hundreds of dollars to just get the truck to my home.

Since I had hired 2 men for the day to help me move, I would then have to pay them a second days pay because quite frankly, I couldn't see the reality of moving on a day I just drove 600 miles (there and back) just to get the truck. Not to mention, another 2 days rental of the truck to handle the distance.

I suggested they look up the word "reservation" in the dictionary where they would discover it meant "guarantee of a product". As I said, I will move on time no thanks to them since I had another option available to me. But I can't help but think that this practice cannot be legal. I at least wanted to alert other consumers.
