Complaint Review: Undergrounds Coffeehaus

Undergrounds Coffeehaus Pays only $2 USD under the table Ft Lauderdale Florida

Undergrounds Coffeehaus doesn't have much to offer. Frozen tater tots advertised as gourmet, dusty furniture, old books, mold in the AC unit, constantly hot inside because the moldy AC unit barely works, and to top it off, the employees are only paid $2 an hour under the table, and then are working off tips.

The owner is in so much debt that the employees barely get paid as it is, let alone such an insultingly low wage. The clientele isn't large enough for the tips to compensate.  Also, this business has been open for thirteen years, but the employees were NEVER paid an actual wage. They didn't even start making $2/hr until the place had been open for ten years.

Then, when the pandemic hit, the owner had the audacity to open a fundraiser to "Save the Haus". It doesn't deserve to be saved, it deserves to be shut down.

As a former slave to this s**t hole, all I have left to say is SCREW YOU just like you've screwed everyone who ever worked for you.

I wasn't there for 13 years, the shop has been open for 13 years. That's written out quite plainly, so I don't know where that assumption came from. Because I called myself a slave? $2 an hour is slave labour as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't fired, I quit because I found an actual job. Again, why the assumption? When I realized the shady business practices going on, I left as quick as I could. I've been trying to figure out how to get this place shut down because I don't understand how she could have possibly gotten away with this crap for as long as she has

When you say that the employees are "paid under the table".  That means that they don't report your income to the State and IRS and don't pay any taxes on it.  Which of course means you don't pay taxes on it either.  So if what you are saying is true, what did the IRS and state say when you reported them(and yourself)?

Tipped Employees in Florida do not earn the same rate as Non-Tipped Employees, but if your employer is paying you less than the minimum that is illegal.  So again what did the State labor board say when you reported them?

For you to say that the employees were NEVER paid an actual wage, that means you have been there for 13 years.  Which brings up the question, why didn't you leave earlier if it was so bad? Are you really saying that in 13 years you couldn't find a better job at other coffee houses or restaurants?  That's actually saying more about you than the company, and not in a good way.

So why were you fired?
