i received a letter from united access financial inc that i was one of the winners of the shoppers sweepstakes held on april 5th 2008. my claim number was DH/SUL-0011. they enclosed a check in the amount of $4980.00 saying that this was deducted from my winnings and was to expedite the processing. they said the tax amount was 2985 u.s. dollars to be paid by money gram or western union. that was a big red flag. also, that check for 4980.00 is for payment of applicable government taxes? then why are they asking for only 2985.00? their amounts don't match for the taxes in which they are talking about. if you are being taxed for 4980.00, the government for sure will not say a different amount.
so if any of you get a similar letter, be aware. this is not real. i am also trying to contact claxton bank @ 121 w main street claxton, georgia. this bank does exist and has branches in claxton, georgia.
also, i made a copy of the check. if the check is real, the copy will show the words either void or nulo. when i made a copy of the check that i received, none of that showed-it was the same as the check they sent me. i scanned my payroll check-the void and nulo showed. on the check from united access it states in the very small print on the back of it "void copy protection."
this means if someone should try to make a copy, "void" should show on the check. well, guess what doesn't show on their check? definetly a scam.
