I received a letter from United Concordia/iDental (dated September 5th) stating that effective January 1, 2015 they are discontinuing ALL individual or family polices generated through Virginia's state based marketplace.  No basis for this cancellation was given!  However, the January 1st date corresponds to the date when big ticket dental insurance items such as Crowns, Root Canals or other expensive work are first allowed for people who had purchased polices via the state based marketplace on January 1, 2014.

The implication is that this insurance company looked at their bottom-line costs and decided it was better for them to end these polices BEFORE any high ticket insurance claims are submitted.  This is especially true given that United Concordia plans to continue company driven Group Dental policies in Virginia.  If I'm wrong then it would behoove them to be specific about WHY they are cancelling these polices!

Trying to get a clear answer from United Concordia (via the phone) is a waste of time as they will only direct you over to what they say is the New Sales department.  However, in fact it the sales department for another dental insurance company 'Ameritas Group', which is a division of Ameritas Life Insurance Corp.  And they will not be writing any 2015 policies until at least October 2014.  One good thing is that Ameritas Representative I spoke to said their company would waive any waiting period for people who had policies with United Concordia.

United Concordia's abandonment of these types of policies is a poor reflection upon them AND makes me wonder if their actions are even legal under the Obamacare (ACA Healthcare Law) guidelines.
