United Readers Service INC. United Readers Service INC. Subscription Rip-off Lakewood Ohio
I received a call in June from a magazine subscription service enticing me to sign up for magazines; they said they were from the Hearst Magazine and I was told that if I sign up for 5 magazines I would get 2 for free. And get entered in their 100,000 sweepstakes.
I not sure but I think I was told that If I will get two years free if I sign up for two years.
After about a month I reviewed the information packet they sent me and read in fine print on the back of one of the letters that I will be paying 24 consecutive payments of 39.90 for a total of 957.60. I called immediately after reading this to cancel. They told me it was too late to cancel due to their 10 day cancellation policy.
After they told me that I immediately went to http://law.justia.com/washington/codes/title19/19.158.120.html and found that I have 42 days to cancel and informed them of this per Washington state law. They still refused to cancel. I sent a copy of my bill with the cancel and a copy of the RCW code to their Legal department (return receipt request)
I calculated the subscription for each of the magazines if I would have signed up individually and found that it would cost me 615.48 for four years. That is overpayment to them in the sum of 342.12. Where is the savings!!! A total ripoff.
Their website is http://www.unitedreaders.com/
I have also contacted my local news media and consumer reports.
