I APPLIED FOR A DRIVER POSITION FOR THE COMPANY. THEY OFFERED TO PICK ME UP @ 6AM AND TRAIN TIL 2:30PM, WHEN I ARRIVED AT THERE OFFICE AT 4:30PM, UNIVERSAL EXPLAINED THERE MISLEADING/SCAMED POLICY. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PAY THEM $78.00 PER DAY, DAILY BY 6AM. YOU NEED TO SIGN A CONTRACT. IF YOU DECIDE TO QUIT, YOU NEED TO GIVE UNIVERSAL A 7 DAY NOTICE, WHICH MEANS YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CALLS. IF YOU BREAK THE CONTRACT, UNIVERSAL WILL SUE YOU $24,000+. YOU AS A DRIVER NEED TO FUEL YOUR OWN CAR, WASH THE CAR, PAY TOLLS AND AIRPORT FEES DAILY & ANY CUSTOMER PAYING WITH A CREDIT CARD, YOU WILL LOOSE 10%. NOT TO MENTION, YOU NEED TO HUSTLE YOUR OWN CALLS. WHICH MEANS YOU NETWORK. I DECIDED AS A SINGLE MOM AND I AM DISABLED, TO SPEAK WITH RICK, I STATED, THIS JOB IS NOT FOR ME. RICK AND BECAME ANGRY AND WALKED OUT OF THE HIRING OFFICE AND SAID TO ME, GET A RIDE HOME. I ASKED I JUST WAS INFORMED OF ALL YOUR TERMS, AND I WANT TO MAKE YOU MONEY AND MYSELF, BUT I CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY YOUR COMPANY $3,075+ PER MONTH. NO DAYS OFF. AGAIN HE SAID CALL A FRIEND FOR A RIDE HOME. I ASKED HOW MUCH IS IT TO GET A CAB HOME, SINCE YOU PUT ME IN THIS SITUATION, (A TRAP) RICK SAID $50.00. I REPLIED, I CAN NOT AFFORD THAT. RICK SAID ILL GIVE YOU A RIDE TO THE LOCAL TRAIN STATION. A CAB DRIVER TOOK ME TO THE STATION SWEARING AND SAID RICK NEVER SAID ITS FREE. I HAD TO PAY OUT OF MY POCKET AND TAKE 2 TRAINS HOME, NOT TO MENTION IT TOOK ME 3 HOURS TO GET HOME AND I HAD A BACK SURGERY THE DAY BEFORE. IF UNIVERSAL COULD NOT TAKE CARE OF THERE POTENTIAL AND THERE EMPLOYEES, WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY DO TO THERE CUSTOMER'S? THEY ARE SELFISH AND CUT THROAT. BEWARE!!!

You can file multiple complaints for "worker misclassification"

#2Consumer Suggestion

Fri, November 05, 2010

This is a common scam where companies run "employment" ads when in fact they are looking for an "independent contractor". and otherwise.

Taxi cab operations are USUALLY run as "lease" contract operations, but most of them cross the line with work rules, etc that actually make the driver an "employee" under the law.

Worker misclassification is illegal, being a violation of state labor laws, federal labor laws, and IRS code.

Notify the people at where you found the ad that an illegal ad is being placed.

Get the IRS form SS-8 and fill it out completely and submit it. [This is my favorite, and is the most effective].

Write letters to state and federal labor offices.

Legally, they CANNOT run a "job" ad or run any ad in an "employment" section if they are not looking for an "EMPLOYEE".

They need to advertise in the "BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY" or "SELF EMPLOYMENT" section to be in legal compliance.
