I signed up in January of 2010 for a membership at Urban Active.  When I joined I specifically asked if I could quit whenever I wanted to and was told I could and that I there would be no hidden charges.  I was happy with the gym but after 9 months decided I did not have the time nor did I want to spend the money anymore for the gym.

When I went to the gym in October, I told the girl behind the counter that I would like to talk to someone about canceling my membership.  I was informed that I still had three more months left on my contract.  I told her about what I was told when I signed up, and she told that they had changed that policy and that they could do this without my knowledge.  She then told me I could quit, but that it would cost me the rest of the months remaining on my contract.  I told her I would just wait until January to cancel it.

When I went back in the first week of January I was told that I would have to fill out a form and send it certified mail to their corporate offices.  When I read the form it said that I would also be charged $20 for canceling.  Since then I have been charged in January and February.  I went back and looked at some of my old statements and saw where I was charged $15 for maintenance fees which I was never told about when I joined.  I have been reading other websites and post from other people that have tried to quit and are still getting charged months after the fact.  I cannot afford for this to keep occurring.
