I opened my physician office in August of 2000 in Weslaco, TX At the time, the only telephone service in that area was Verizon so I was at their mercy re service and charges. They acted like a monopoly. About 1 year ago, Time Warner Cable began offering business phone service and I finally switched at the end of last month due to great savings and much better service.

Verizon is now charging me a $500 cancellation fee. When I called to discuss this, they claimed that I consented to a cancellation fee by a complicated formula which they claim is stated in every monthly statement. I never signed any contract, no one ever discussed this policy with me, and there is no such declaration in any communication Verizon ever sent to me.

Talking to their customer reps was like talking to rude robots. My belief is the reason they do this is to retaliate against anyone discontinuing service, thinking the customer is too afraid not to pay because Verizon will then ruin their credit.
