I disconnected my Verizon telephone service in August 2004 when I moved out of my apartment. I was assured by the representative that they would send the final bill to my new address. Well, a month goes by and no bill. I called again.

This representative stated he has no history of that on my account. I ask again for the account to be turned off as I no longer live at that address. He said yes and said it would be mailed. At this time the bill was $80.00 and I paid $50.00 of it off over the phone. I received the bill a month later for $567.16! Most of the calls were international calls to Mexico.

When I called again they said that these were the charges for that month. I told this representative that I don't live there and had tried disconnecting twice already. She said there is nothing she could do except send me a fraud packet. So when the fraud packet was sent I filled it out and sent 2 letters. One letter was from my prior landlord stating I no longer lived there and one from my new landlord attesting to my new residence.

Well they said the fraud packet was invalid because my identity had not been stolen. I guess that was true. It wasn't my identity; it was my telephone account that had been stolen. When I told her the calls were to Mexico and that she could cross reference my telephone records to see that I had never called Mexico prior to this statement. She said she didn't have access.

Verizon sent me to collections despite the evidence I submitted. I called the agency and told them that I refuse to pay this bill. They said that there was nothing that they could do. So it has ruined my credit but I refuse to pay for something I didn't authorize. I am still talking to Verizon in the hopes that they see the errors of their ways. But I am not holding my breath.
