I was trying to update my daughter's cell phone and found she can't have the one that she likes either the one she had before without buying a mandatory data plan , it doesn't matter to them that she doesn't need it. Why do we have to buy and pay for something we don't want? Wrong....Wrong and Wrong. I'm thinking in switching our phone company for one that does not enforce customer to buy for things they don't need or want.

Verizon will not do well with this mandatory policy! Customers have the right to choose what to buy!

They can charge that because well...they can.  People are too fixated on instant 24/7 communication and having the latest gadgets to do what must be done to stop it....stop using their product.
You can try changing providers but all the big ones do the same thing if you want a "Smartphone."  Some of the smaller, or pay as you go might, might not hit you with it.  Some even give you unlimited everything for a reasonable price...the catch being a,  you have to pay full price for the phone and b. coverage can be questionable.
