In today’s world when many people pay their utility bills electronically very seldom do they look at the monthly statements, read the fine print.
Real Life example:-
Average home uses 750 kWh/month at the Ct. CL&P Utility’s current standard rate of $0.07615 = $57.11/month (Note this does not include delivery service charges)
A six month fixed locked in rate might come in around $0.072/kWh using 750 kWh = $54.000
A saving s of $3.11 per month which results to a total $18.66 savings for the total six months.
Now let’s read the fine print “Six months fixed price. Cancellation fee. Rolls over to variable rate without notice”
Well what are these variable rate, right now many of them are running between $0.0899 to $0.1299 with some higher and some lower. I am going to use the variable rate that my local 3rd party provider is currently using which is at $0.1199/kWh.
Using the same amount of electricity of 750kWh per month the new bill will be $89.93 which is a $35.93 increase per month from my lock in rate wiping out the $18.66 saving that I accrued over the past 6 months. But on top of this it is $32.82 per month higher than my original utility supplier’s bill which results in you paying 57% more for electricity.
So read the fine print because these companies are raking in hundreds of millions of dollar per year.
