I have a 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle with 58K miles. Have performed regular maintenance per manufacturer's manual. Main bearings have failed in engine and Volkswagen will not repair under their warranty.

When the check engine light starting coming on, the car was taken to Charles Maund Volkswagen. The mechanic there found metal shavings in the oil pan. The mechanic says the metal is bearing material and was caused by driving the car without oil.

The oil had been changed every 3000 miles and was never run without oil. A chemical analysis of the shavings indicates the failure was not due to lack of lubrication.
