I received a letter from Volt Marketing Inc today with a check for $998.78 (exactly the same as another report filed today) with winning ticket number 3749065 (also the same) stating that my lump sum winnings are $8000 (also the same).
The whole letter is word for word the same as reported in another entry made today. My check number is 11269187. No one else has reported that so I can't say if they are the same or not.
It's obvious that this is another twist on the popular Nigerian scam. I hope no one falls for this.
I've heard two scenarios for these scams:
1. The check has real money behind it but the account numbers have been stolen. then you're on the hook to pay that back when you find out the money is not yours.
2. The check is no good and once you deposit in your account then they get you to pay the tax and processing fee with the expectation of receiving the full prize money - and it never comes. Then the check bounces and all your real money is long gone.
The first clue is that there is no return address on the envelope. The fact that you didn't really enter any contest or have any affiliation with Consumer Rewards Program should also throw up red flags.
So if you get one of these, just use the check for wallpaper.
