A month ago I ordered a vonage phone service. They were supposed to contact bellsouth to transfer my existing phone number. After 2 weeks I called vonage and asked why bellsouth line is still on. They could not start the transfer process because they could not e-mail me the authorization form because they misspelled my e-mail address.

They apologized and promised me not to charge me for unused dates due to their fault. Two weeks later they charged me monthly fee. When they charge me a monthly service fee their router was not even a month old with me (the date stamp is still on the box)! Last morning when I asked them why bellsouth line is still on they said they could not transfer because I am using the same line for dsl and phone. Being furious in their mishandling and greed I asked them to cancel.
soon they charged my account $119. When I asked them the detail $40 disconnection fee $79 for the router. The router box even not opened yet.

They do not want the router to be returned, they know it is not worthy of $10.

Without getting connected they ripped me off about $200 so far. What a gluttonouss company is vonage!
Although all the communication is between me and vonage the account is in my sister. So far she has not given them the authorization to disconnect. I need a legal advice on how to charge them if they do not refund my money after she tell them that they cancelled the account without her knowledge.

I am a former employee of the company named Norvergence from NJ. When the company filed for bankruptcy and fired all the employees left, and did not pay us, we found out (too late of course)
that the company was a SCAM. I later learned that a company called Vonage was in the area about 6 months after Norvergence. I went to apply. While there i noticed that alot of Norvergence people were there also. That raised a red flag. I decided not to take the job. Screw me once and that's it. Anyway people should really do their homework on a new company. I don't know if they are a scam, ( i believe they are) But i would suggesst you search Norvergence on the site and you be the judge. Thanks for reading this. and please beaware

When I made the mistake of signing up for Vonage. I was told by the sales representative that transferring my bellsouth mumber would be no problem. I specifically asked the rep not once but twice if she was sure that the number tranfer could be done. I explained to her That My Bellsouth account was how I get my earthlink DSl and again I was assured that the number transfer would not be a problem and would take about 2 weeks. All of this was recorded by vonage.

I must point out that understanding this person was not very easy. Had a very strong Indian accent read everything from a script.

I was emailed that the Bellsouth would not allow the transfer. and I needed to sign up with a cable ISP Are keep my bellsouth number and pay and vonage number bellsouth number.

I Immediately E mailed customer service to cancel Vonage account I had not received the router DHL yet. I received an Emai telling me to call customer service to obtain an RA number to retuern router. As the many complaints to this website state customer service is non existent I would call it customer abuse.

After 2 waits of over an hour and a half I ws told there was a 40.00 security fee to be charged to the debit card account was set up. At that time, I told the Vonage representative to not charge card anymore and that Vonage was not authorized to chatge the card. I was told that I could not get RA number for router unless they could charge a card. I was put on hold.

When rep later came back on he told me he was told he could enter bogus credit card numbers to get RA number. I was never told by rep that the card on my account was changing. I thought It was away around the card reqirement in their accounting system. The credit for retun of the router for initial sign up was crediteed to Card number 4 numbers of 1111.

This started a nightmare of problems with receiving a credit. I finally was Issued a check a month and half after router was returned. Their system Would not allow a credit to the right debit card. I spent more than 15 hours on hold or on the phone with customer service to get this resolved

Bottom line is, I have strong evidence of fraud on the part of this company. My story is well documented in the form faxes and to Their corporate Head Quarters as well as all Emails and their ticket numbers. At one time a representative admitted that charging the card in that matter was against company policy!

Why not just get a new number

I signed up for Vonage last year.
We moved into a new townhouse complex, that didn't have telephone landlines installed due to a labour dispute. After getting a $250 cell phone bill, we went with Vonage.
While we didn't get our old number transferred right away, we were given a temporary, or virtual, number.
In the end, we just kept the virtual number as our new phone number.

But, despite any problem with getting our number transferred, we were able to phone out and receive incoming calls from the second we signed up and plugged in the router.

It seems some people get hung up (pun intended) on keeping their same phone number, and don't realize that they are getting everything Vonage offers.

Perhaps some complaint should be lodged against Bell for not releasing your phone number. The DSL excuse sounds flimsy -- and that comes from Bell, not from Vonage.

I don't see a rip-off here, just someone who wanted to cancel before really giving the thing a try. The terms of the cancellation policy that Vonage has does seem to favour them, but it is probably that way to protect them after losing money on all the free routers they sent out when they first started.

You say you have DSL. Well, DSL is through the phone lines. You would have to keep a phone line open in order to have DSL. Yes, maybe Vonage should have taken your hand and explained this to you but ultimately this is your responsibility.

I'm a Vonage customer also. I have found that Vonage customer service is non-existant. The phone works well if you have the tech skills to support yourself. If you search for Vonage forums there are several boards that provide good tips for installing and fixing problems.
