I purchased a Sanyo 32" LCD television from Walmart on Gosford Rd in Bakersfield CA for my sweetheart 12/10/10 for Christmas paying extra for the 2 year extended warranty. He decided not to put it up right away because we already had a tv that was working so he put it in our closet (still in the box un opened). The tv sat there Until September of 2012 until he finally decided to take it out and set it up. We took it out of the box, set it up and turned it on only to find the screen messed up. I found the paperwork from when I purchased the tv and began the warranty process. Instead of using Walmart customer care web site at productassist.com/walmart I called their 800 number - 877-968-6391. They took all of my information and said they would send a box to ship it back to them for repair. I told them that since I just took it out of the original box that I could send it in that - they said no you have to use the one we send you. The box came, we took it back out of the original box and shipped it to Waranty Logisitcs /Asurion at 5700 Airport Dr, Ontario CA 91761-8620. They sent it back to us within 4 days with the frame around the screen completely scratched up and a letter stating"Due to physical, liquid damage, or prior unauthorized repair that is not covered under the provisions of your service plan, we were unable to repair your unit". I called them to find out what the "H" they were talking about because it was sitting in a closet!!! They gave me a run around saying that the screen was cracked and it wasn't covered under the warranty (there is not a crack in the screen). They gave me Sanyo's number 800-877-5032 and said maybe they would help me. I called Sanyo- Amy said she would turn it over to her supervisor Paul, who was always in a meeting when we called. Finally she said that she turned it over to Mr Jayroe in the corperate office we called him at 800-877-5036- but was not able to get ahold of him by phone but we got his e-mail address. He e-mailed us asking for pictures of the tv and the box it came in- we told him that we had thrown out the original box because Warranty Logistics said we had to use the one they sent so we sent pictures of the tv. His final response was that Sanyo only has a 1 year warranty and they would not help us either. I called the 877 number for Walmart's extended warranty again - the "supervisor" said that the inside screen was cracked and the warranty does not cover the damage. I asked her how sitting in a closet was going to cause the inside screen to crack and told her that I am going to file a complaint with the better business bureau and others so she gave me a correspondence address NAW, PO Box 1818, Sterling VA, 20167.

Update: Warranty company sent a reimbursement check

I am happy to announce that the warranty company N.E.W (I previously stated NAW because that is what the person told me when providing me with the correspondence address) sent me a reimbursement check. I can now go out and purchase a replacement tv. I don't think I will purchase a Sanyo or the extended warranty this time, but it is nice to know that some people and organizations understand unique situations like mine.Of course it is unfortunate that I had to go through the better business bureau to resolve the complaint, but all is well that ends well I suppose.

#3Consumer Suggestion

Mon, October 15, 2012

Your 2nd and 3rd year coverage is essentially the same as the mfr warranty - electrical, electronic and mechanical failures.  If your screen was physically damaged, neither the mfr warranty nor the plan covers it.  ALL retailers have similar plans.  TVs actually fail at exceedingly low rates; extended service contracts for solid state electronics are stratistically unnecessary.

If they damaged it upon return shipment, that is a separate issue which you would have a claim against if you have before and after pictures.

The fact that you got suckered into a plan is YOUR issue as a gullible consumer, not Walmart's.

The fact that YOU waited 2 years is also your issue as a consumer; what if it was 3, 4, 5......?
