My husband and I had a checking account with Washington Mutual, and a check we had deposited bounced. They took the money back out of our account, which would have been fine, except they did not tell us about it. I didn't know until we started getting calls from people we had bounced checks to because we were now overdrawn. I made arrangements with the person who had bounced the check we put in our account, and redeposited the account (with good funds this time). A mistake was made by Washington Mutual, and instead of redepositing this check, they deducted it AGAIN!

So, instead of being +800, -800, +800, it was +800,-800, -800. I tried many times to get them to straighten this out or send me a printout of my account (a statement). What I got instead was a HANDWRITTEN statement. Obviously, I closed the account.

Later, I found out they had reported this as a debt of $2400 (the -1600 plus fees) to all major credit reporting agencies. I have since disputed this account with the credit agencies and, since Washington Mutual cannot prove I owe this money, the credit reporting agencies have taken this off. However, Check Protection Services will not take it off. Because of this, I have been unable to open a checking account for four years!
