My fiance bought a white rat from this pet store as a companion to a rat that I already have. The Wayne Pet Place keeps their rats in horrible conditions. If you do a google search on pet rats you will see immediately that cedar and pine bedding is toxic to rats and can kill them. It gives them an upper respiratory infection that makes them extremely sick. Basically they sold my fiance a rat that had been kept in a glass aquarium with pine bedding and hardly any ventilation. She is sneezing and wheezing when she breathes. Then to my horror I noticed that she is covered in bugs!!! The poor little thing is suffering so badly. :( :( :(
Obviously, I wasn't going to take her back to that horrible place. I took her to the vet to see if anything could be done for her. He gave her something that is equivalent to Frontline for small animals to get rid of the bugs...which turned out to be lice! And she is also on antibiotics. The visit cost me over one hundred dollars. When my fiance stopped by the store to tell them what happened, the owner wouldn't even come out to see him and told the girl working there to tell him that, "He doesn't guarantee the health of the animals that he sells." No apology, nothing. I feel really awful for the other animals that have bugs crawling all over them and are kept in bedding that doesn't enable them to breathe. Hopefully, I separated the two quickly enough that my other rat doesn't get sick also.
