Ever since I got my current phone number, I have been getting harassing collection phone calls from Wells Fargo Card company. When I explain to them that I am not the person they are looking for, they accuse me of lying. Even after I give them my full name, they are confrontational. When I told one specific caller named Joseph (who does not have a last name) to stop calling or I would notify the police, he accused me of making threats!

The calls are mostly at inappropriate times. When I called the number they gave me, I got treated like dirt. No one there gives me a first and last name or employee number, so I can't even report them to their supervisor and be sure they know who I am complaining about. I am so frustrated by their incompetence and lack of decent nature.

Andy, you are dealing with "mental midgets" here.

Andy,

People who do debt collections are usually what you could call "mental midgets".

They are usually dependent on drugs and/or alcohol, and have debt problems themselves.

These people are desperate to collect money. They do not care if you don't actually owe it, they just want it so they can buy some more crack.

They hide behind the safety of the cubicle walls they dwell within and know they will say things over the safety of the phone that they would never say in person. They are punks.

File a police report immediately, and then have your phone carrier track and trace the calls.

Also go to ftc.gov and register the complaint each time they call.

Verify who they actually are. Are they actually employees of Wells Fargo or are they a third party debt collector collecting on behalf of Wells Fargo, or are they a junk debt buyer who bought the account?

This is very important to figure out as the laws change based on each circumstance.

If you haven't already...

Tell them to stop calling you.

Keep a record of the dates & times that they call.

If the calls persist send them a certified letter demanding that they stop calling you and that you are not the person they are looking for.
