I purchased furnitured from a store I had never done business with before. I asked if they had 0% interest for one year, as that is the way I had always financed with Haverty's Furniture -they said yes and I signed the paperwork.

I started getting bills from Wells Fargo and noted that the minimum payment was very small - so, I doubled the payments with the intention that it would be paid in full in 1 year. Out of the blue, I opened my bill to pay this month and found that without notification that the year was up - they had assessed 157.90 in finance charges - without notifying me of the balance so that I could pay it in full before the finance charges accued.

I called the company and told them this was unfair practice and very underhanded, and they told me it was my fault that I did not check the time that the 1-year limit was up - I told them Haverty's always set their payments so there was no question that the account would be paid in full at the end of the year, so no interest, and they said they set theirs up so that we didn't even have to make a payment for a year - I asked them why they even bothered to send monthly statements then and they said "so we can keep an eye on things".

I told them I would never have gone to the trouble to ask for 0% interest or make double monthly payments if I had not intended to have this paid off at the end of the year to avoid interest - I could have paid cash for it all up front!!!! They said in effect "too bad" - it is your fault. When I called the 800 number I got a recording "temporarily unable to assist". I asked the local guy if I went to one of the local Wells Fargo banks here, if they would help me since the guy in the finance office obviously wouldn't, and he said "we are not affiliated" - ????Same exact logo as on their banks around town.....

Please read your statements each month

The statement you received every month stated when your sub account would end. Store financing is the key source of WFF's leads to solicit for mortgages. So there is no way you didn't get a phone call from your local office. You had free money for 12 months.

It is no one's responsibility but your own to keep track.
