I was given a safe deposit box free of charge by World Savings. World Savings got acquired by Wachovia, which was finally acquired by Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo informed me that there was no change in my account contract including the Safe deposit box. I am 79 year old retiree and the contents of the box were part of my savings. About 2 years ago, I discovered the lock on my box was changed. I still have the key given to me by World Savings. I live in Modesto area, whereas the safe deposit box was rented in Laguna Hill branch of Wells Fargo, as my son lived there. Talked to a person named Ruby at the bank, who told me the box was drilled open for non payment of fees. Please note: box was given free and Wells Fargo acknowledged by their letter ( which I have ) that there was no fee. Ruby said the contents of the box were turned over to California Controllers office. Controller has nothing on my behalf. All this time, I had over 100,000 in deposits with Wells Fargo in two accounts. My pay checks, Social Security checks, a Union pension and other monies were directly deposited. Bank had two phone numbers on record and I received my monthly statements on line. The point being that I hadn’t disappeared without leaving any trace. So why drill open a box and change key. Bank claims, " Safe deposit boxes are able to be closed without the return of the issued keys,” as per their letter of Oct. 13, 2017. But they give no reason as to why the box can be closed since in the same letterthey admit,” The safe deposit box. Was rented out as free of charge.” The contents included precious metals and gold coins, plus some other valuables worth about 25,000.
