I just received a notice from West Bay Acquisitions that they are collecting $50.44 dollars from me for Hollywood Videos. There are no specifics to the charges and all they do is list DVDs that have been rented from Hollywood 2 years ago. I had rented movies from Hollywood, always returned the movies and was never notified by Hollywood of any outstanding charges. First from what I understand about collection laws all charges that a firm is collecting on need to be specified.

Second I know I do not have any outstanding balance with Hollywood Video. It looks like West Bay just pulled names of previous Hollywood customers and is trying to scam them for money. If you get notice from these people DO NOT PAY. By paying them you only encourage this illegal activity. Tell them you want to dispute the charges and I would suggest you call them and record a conversation with them for proof you have disputed the charges. Make sure you tell them the call is being recorded. If you just send them a letter back make sure you send it back as confirmed delivery.

I received a collection letter from Allied Interstate LLC reported by West Bay Acquisitions.  All it says is that according to West Bay Acquisitions, I owe $58.80 for something.  It doesn't specify any details at what it might be for.  Just call us and pay, or send the coupon in and pay.  I googled West Bay Acquisitions, and found this website for a clue.  On the letter, there IS a cryptic "DVD" in the Re: line.  I assume it may be the same as the previous poster.  I had an account with Hollywood Video.  I never had a balance over $20, and I didn't have an outstanding balance when they closed 5 years ago.  I think these guys are fishing.  Possibly even "phishing" for personal information.  Until they can show me how I owe this money with dates and details, I'll be disregarding their letters.
