I graduated from Western Governors University in 2013, but have yet to find a job in the field I earned my degree in. I still work in the field that I was in when I started WGU. Not only did I feel like something was missing from my educational experience, as in, I didn't feel prepared, but I also found out that WGU began offering additional certifications to supplement the degree that they never offered me.

They began offering these certifications two years before I graduated. I felt like, as a current WGU student at the time, I should have been offered these certifications, especially since they would have given me the knowledge i felt I was lacking after graduation. When I called Western Governors university, all I got was the run around. I first was told that my program was "set", and that I wasn't entitled to the certifications under my program. I responded that, as a student with two years left in my program, I should have been offered the additional course because WGU obviously had to realize that the degree program was lacking something, or they wouldn't have offered them. To that, I got no reply.

Then I was contacted by student services who said my lack of employment hits were probably due to my resume. The lady I talked to was very nice and helpful. I made the changes to my resume that she suggested..still no help. I kept contacting the school, getting nowhere. I talked to one gentleman who claimed he would help me. He claimed he understood my concern. he said he would get back to me in a few days, but he didn't. I had to call him back a week later, and he claimed he was "just about to call me"..we talked a bit about the certifications, and he said he'd let me know soon, and that he wouldn't take a week to call me back this time. but he never called me back.

I attempted to call  him back a week later, but was told he was "on the phone" and would call me back. After several attempts, I still haven't heard from him. I Contacted the accrediting body for WGU and was told they don't handle complaints from individuals, The State of Utah Department of Commerce Division of Consumer Protection and they were no help either. I contacted The Department of Consumer affairs and The attorney General in my own state, but they said there was nothing they could do,

Not everything was bad with the school. I had the nicest, most helpful mentor throughout my program. After I graduated though, the help they claim to offer ihas been minimal. I still have a copy of every email I have received from Western Governors University concerning this problem, and all the correspondence from all the agencies I had contacted. If there is a class action suit, I will definitley be on it.

The only thing I have found funny about this whole ordeal, is that WGU keeps sending me these "Tell A Friend" cards in the mail to help recruit new students to the school. I'd never do that to a friend, or an enemy for that matter. When people ask me about my experience with the school, I pull out the file  of all the correspondence and let them read how "helpful" they have been to me. I don't have to say anything, I just let the emails and complaint forms speak for themselves. All I have to show for my experience is a pretty diploma and loan debt. I have since began taking supplemental classes to fill in the knowledge gaps i feel I have. The shame is, after all the money and time I spent working towards my degree, I'm right back in school, paying more money, to get the training I should have gotten at Western Governors University.
