Complaint Review: White Oak Run Labradors

White Oak Run Labradors Labrador breeder North Dartmouth Massachusetts

Be careful!  We put our deposit for our new family member in June of 2012.  He was born on August 3.  We picked him up in early September at 6 weeks old and named him Chase.  He instantly became our best friend and family member.  Chase has changed my life.  He waits for me every day to come home and goes crazy when he sees me.

We waited until he was 7 months old before taking him to get neutered.  When we brought him in to the vet the week before for pre-blood work, we got a call saying that his kidney levels were high and we need further testing and an ultrasound.  I brought my 10 year old daughter to the vet with me before school for the blood work.  The vet came out and told me that she thought he had juvenile renal kidney dysplasia. http://www.vetprof.com/clientinfo/juvenilerenal.html .  I asked what that meant and the vet told me that it meant a shortened life. I asked how short and she replied 2-4 years.  It’s a horrible disease.  My 10 year old daughter and I cried for hours.  It was later confirmed with an ultrasound.

It is a congenital disease that may be passed on from generation to generation.  We informed White Oak Run Labradors via e-mail.  We wanted to let them know so no one else would go through what we are going through. I’m angry and I’m bitter. I love Chase and would do anything for him to have a normal life.  It’s simply not going to happen.  My life has changed forever.  We let them know about the diagnosis expecting a response of  “I’m sorry to hear that”… or “we will retire the parents”…

Two vets told me it was likely that this will happen again if they continue to breed these dogs.  I don't know if there is a way to tell for sure but why take the chance?

After we did not get a response from an e-mail we sent a letter.  We did finally received a call from the breeder.  There was no mention of returning the $950.00 that we paid to pay for the future endless medical bills we will incur taking care of Chase.  She did ask…”Do you want to return him?”  Really?  Ya. You tell my 10 and 12 year old girls.  Not only did she not offer to refund any money, she informed me that she is breeding the same dogs AGAIN!  I hope this was a fluke but these dogs should be tested!  I hope that nobody goes through what are going through right now!

Should she really profit from a dog that was born sick and was diagnosed at 7 months to have a very short life with expensive medical bills?

Also, how do I know someone didn’t notify them before Chase was born and became a sick member of our family?  We notified them in March of 2013!  I really hope that the new lab puppies are healthy!  Every time I look at Chase I see a dog that soon will be suffering and we'll have to make a decision to end his life.

If you want to contact me please e-mail me at (((REDACTED))).

Today I lost my best friend. For 3 years Chase was the most beautiful and loyal dog. There wasn’t a mean bone in his body. I’ve known he was sick since 7 months and did everything I could to take care of him. I knew this day was going to come but hoped it was years away. I know he's not suffering but it doesn't help my shattered heart.

I’m thankful for the three years I had with him but I’m so angry that my daughters and I were cheated more time with him.

This whole thing had made me lose total faith in God. Watching my daughters have their hearts ripped out today was too much. Some people get dogs and chain them outside all day and pay no attention to them. Why take a dog that was filled with so much love and was loved so much? It’s totally senseless.

I’m thankful for my neighbors that are probably almost as sad as I am today. They helped us spoil him and he loved them too.

If you have a dog give them a kiss today for Chase.

Hi Linda

I really hope you have a healthy dog.  The mother of Chase was Lola.

I hope that helps.

All the best,

Tom

i'm so sorry for all your pain. I have a Buddy puppy that was born August 29th and I'm now so concerned for her. Can you tell me who the Mom of your puppy was?

Although I admire you sticking up for your friend, in all fairness, you don’t know what you’re talking about.  Did you really think returning Chase after my daughters had him over 5 months was an option?  I would say you have about as much heart as Karen.  Seriously?  Think about it.

She is such a caring breeder ask me how many times she contacted me to see how he was doing.  You guessed it… Zippo… zero… not one time.

I estimate my expenses on Chase to be over $5000 in less then 3 years.  He is in stage 4.  There is no stage 5. You mention God.  Well this experience has made me lose my faith in god so please don’t reference God in regards to Chase.  It’s made me bitter and angry to have dealt with such a heartless breeder.

She profited 950$ for a puppy she guaranteed to be healthy for 12 months.  He was never healthy and was diagnosed @ 7 months.  Did she offer to return (any) money to help with the expenses?  You guessed it correctly again.  NOPE.  What would Judge Judy say about that?

Why would anybody purchase a puppy from her?  There are so many better options.  I’m sorry to burst your bubble but my original post was 100% accurate.  Facts are facts and I’d repost it again today!

Hello....I am a personal friend to Karen, the dog breeder.."White Oak Run Labradors".  I read your complaint when you first posted it in 2013.  I wanted to write a rebuttal, but did not.  It had always bothered my what you had said.  So I guess that is why I am writing a rebuttal now.  First of all....Karen is NOT uncaring, nor is she "in it" for the money.  She had provided many homes with adorable puppys in the past.  How can you blame the health of your puppy on her.  Had she known the puppy was sick, she would not have sold the puppy to you.  You were offered to return the puppy and receive a new one.  Granted, you and your girls have become attached....however, what she offered was more than fair.  Allowing your daughters to witness a "sick" puppy slowly go down hill until its death, is probably not a good choice. You should have allowed Karen to give you another puppy as she offered.  Let your girls establish a healthy relationship with a "healthy" puppy.  Not too make light of the situatiion but.....as Judge Judy always says..." You CANNOT have your cake and eat it too. Keeping the puppy and expecting the breeder to finance its medical care throughout its life is quite unrealistic.  I sincerely hope Chase is doing well.....When you wrote your complaint, you were more than likely upset that your new puppy was unfortunately sick.  Now that the dust has settled, I sincerely hope that you see things clearly now.  How could any breeder be responsible.  It is unfortunate that you "trashed" Karen.  She is a dedicated animal lover, and only GOD could have changed what happened to your puppy.  Again, I hope Chase is comfortable and is providing love to your entire family. BE WELL.

This breeder states on her fancy website that her dogs live in the house as family members and NOT in KENNELS. Photo's attached speak a thousand words and PROVE they don't. She LIES about this fact and many others with her deceptive missleading website. Don't learn the hard way, steer clear of this more than shady PUPPY MILL operator.

After reading your responce I had to reply with an update on Karens website status as of late. Karen has since deleted her new website Brookwood Labradors due to being discovered trying to cover her tracts. If you look it up she has put the site to sleep. She has now gone back to White Oak Run Labradors because she can't explain it away. As you said she can try to run but she can not hide from her bad reputation. Good breeders work off there past reputaion not change there website name and continue to breed the same sick dogs with genetic problems. She claims these bad reviews are easily explained away due to one discruntail person who has a grudge. But if anyone does there own research and reads the bad reviews from many differant people on Scamorg and measured up as well as here on rippoff report its plain to see she and her dogs are the problem.

She has since also removed the sick breeding dog buddy's photos and female that you mentioned from her white oak run Labrador website since you saw it. It does not surprize me that she did not call you concerned about your sick puppy and your Childrens feelings. If your in it for just the money with no concience for the animals health or a familys feelings it explains it. Our familys heart go's out to you, your family and Chase. We all have endured more than anyone should ever have and can imagine just how bad you also feel. We are going to try our best so other familys and puppies don't have to suffer as we all have.

Thank you for the information about Karen changing the name of her breeding company.   I found the website and they are still using Buddy to breed.  That is Chase's father.  My guess is that it was the mother dog that was sick that Chase caught his disease from and they probably retired her.

Karen never did contact me to see how he was doing.  She never did ask how my 12 and 13 year old daughters were dealing with the fact that their dog would not live a long life.  Chase is still active.  I go to the vet every 3-6 months and the average amount is about $500.00 per visit.  His food cost an average of $100.00 per month.  He is lisinopril and takes pepcid every day.

I love the dog and the lesson I learned is that there are good people and bad people. How could you breed these beautiful dogs without caring about their wellbeing?  I guess it's all about the money.

She can run and change her name but she can’t escape the Internet.

I had to respond...

I did have to wait to respond to this because I am super emotional. There is some accuracy to White Oak Run Labrador's rebuttal.  I do agree that she offered to take Chase back.  Again, we’re talking about a family member and not a consumer good.  Sending Chase back is simply not an option.

I was also told that if Chase died young that we would be taken care of.  I’m not sure what that means (young? taken care of?)  but I could never get another yellow lab.  I would see Chase in him every time I looked at him. We basically had 5 good months.  5 months that he was sick but we just didn’t know it.

Unfortunately, since the day that I was informed that Chase was sick I remember every conversation very clearly.

When we discussed this situation on the phone the exact words were “we are breeding those same two dogs again now.”  Maybe they changed their mind but I am sure that is what I was told.  I was also told that she breeds them because everyone compliments on how cute their puppies are.

I also asked if kidney disease was discussed with any of the other owners.  The answer was "no."  The owners were only asked how their puppies were doing.  We wouldn’t have known about Chase if we didn’t take him to get neutered.  I just read a case where a whole litter had the disease but only one puppy showed early signs.  To ignore the research and call this an isolated case equal to a downs syndrome baby is simply not responsible breeding.

When I brought Chase to the second vet and told her that there were plans to breed these dogs again I will never forget the look on the vet’s face.  She cringed and told me that it was heartbreaking.  That is very accurate.  It is heartbreaking.  I am certainly not saying that we were sold a sick puppy on purpose.  I mulled over posting this for weeks.  In the end I thought to myself, if I could keep one family from going through this life changing experience it would be worth it.

I clearly did not ask for a return of funds… That is true.  Obviously we are looking at extensive vet bills for a puppy that was never healthy.  He was sick from the time he was born.  We are over $1000 in vet bills for this situation right now.  Not to mention the cost of the special diet.

I asked myself how I would have handled this if I were a breeder.  I think I would have responded immediately to get the details.  How likely could this happen again? Could there be other puppies out there from me that will show signs?  I also would have said that I know this is an awful situation and I can hear your hurt and compassion in your voice.

I am truly sorry and would never wish this on anyone but I am thankful that such caring people have Chase as I know that will give the best life you can as short as it may be.  I also would have said I’m going to return your money to help you deal with the medical expenses.  AND… the most important thing would be to make sure 100% that your dogs will be tested before breeding so no person would ever have to deal with this situation again.  That includes the male who could be a carrier.

It certainly could be an unfortunate sole sick puppy situation.  In which case, I am venting my hurt and frustration for my family’s bad luck.  Chase has been to two veterinarians who think that most likely this is not that case. (((link redacted))) article found on (((link redacted))) “What you see is not always what you get. For those breeders that deny that RD is a problem in their kennel, you would see it if you had done biospies on you dogs.”

I did hear from these people and were very sympathetic to their concerns.  I have NOT bred these 2 dogs again, as stated, I don't know where this statement came from. as stated and had not even planned on breeding the Mom again due to here age now.  However, there have been 4 litters from these 2 parents and everyone else was contacted to ask if they had the same or any other issue.  Not one puppy has this or anything else.  My heart goes out to them, but this was a fluke thing that happens.

I would never knowingly sell a pup to someone knowing something was wrong.  I understand they are upset after owning the puppy for 7 months, but I had no idea this was going to occur. Its just like having a child and something goes wrong down the road. What do you do? I offered my help in any way and asked if they would like another puppy now or at some point down the road. Never once did he ask for his money back it was never discussed.

He stated that he was taking care of him and that was his choice, as he pointed out.  I do not wish to have them care for a sick pup so offered him another. I would take the puppy back and have hime evaluated myself.  He did not want to do that. Also his vet also stated that the parents MAY carry this.  As I stated, the Mom is not having anymore pups as that was her last litter due to her age and she is our house dog.  She has and always had been our family pet. She is extremely healthy.

Our vet stated to us that this is a fluke thing just as a Downs child may be born into a family who has otherwise had healthy children. This is the only puppy in 35 years with this or any other issue. I am truly sorry for this happening to this family.  I talked in length with him and did not think this would be the outcome. I stand by my offer to replace this puppy if he wishes to do so now. I am not wishing to PROFIT from this as he claims. I did tell him repeatedly "I was sorry this happened to him" I am not that way.  I realize he is upset I would be too, but this was NOT my fault. If he would like to talk again I would be more than willing to work this out.
