My company also fell victim to this elaborate scam and lost thousands. It was perfectly orchestrated; they made them self look huge supplying all the documents to set up an account for billing purposes. Their credit references were flawless. They sent accounting statements making them self look real. They even had a fake web site, which is gone now.

We receive a large PO and supplied the request based on all the data retrieved. My sales rep talked with receptionist and purchasing people, everything seamed legitimate and they had reason for everything. Their phone system still works at this time but when you call the recorded message says they've had a flood and their network systems are down.

We will be contacting the local police departments and FBI and I'm sure we'll find a trail to hunt these parasites down. The down side to this, is that it make me leery to extend any type of credit to legitimate businesses form here on out. If you find your self victim to this crime please contact your police department ASAP and file a police report, as I believe there are hundreds of companies just finding out they're victims.
